Quick heads up, when you re fit the new cable, lubricate it but leave the last part nearest the speedo head clean, around 4/5" or you will find some of the lub in the speedo head.

Depending on how many times the inner cable has been changed in the past it might be very worn in the outer cable.

For piece of mind and a longer life I would change the outer at the same time.

Undo all the clips the secure it on its run, tie old to new with sticky tap, then with care and patience, pull the new cable through by pulling out the old cable.

Or you could reroute the new cable on a soother path and just leave the old one there. It would do no harm.

If you do remove the outer there is a circlip holding it in which is a right pig to get out because of the angle and the side of the tunnel is close. A decent sized "mouse hole" in the tunnel side helps this can be used to bring the cable through then fabricate a cover for the hole.
