so after having the car for a good few months and it needing some work and tbh i got a bit disheartened with it but my job doesnt help as a foster carer is 24/7 anyway

the car needs some love and was wondering what is easy to do and what shouldnt i do

some of you may have seen im in middle of working on engine as the previous owners measuring stick was broken so thats in hand just be the cooling then but i think im going to try a expansion tank first

carbs are delloroto 40s they need a service and some work

electrics are shot and it needs ripping out and starting from scratch clocks including

interior, the seats are not good for me plus its just very shoddy workmanship the tunnel is huge and would like to make smaller along with the side bars they just seem to big and pointless

body work being a old sign maker im going to wrap it in something a little different from the norm me thinks plus going to change the rear hope to something with a bit more bracing in

so all in all a lot of work but not big money i dnt think the seats and electrics being the most money plus i wouldnt mind putting a slip in for some fun

i did think about getting rid and buying some thing newer i also thought about building a new kit but then when you work out pros and cons with the UK weather and i live in Wet Wales or shoudl i say West it is not really worth spending shed loads

Any ones thoughts, suggestions or ideas will be greatfully receiveddnt be shy im not the biggest poster in the world as just dnt get the time im afraid

Many thanks in advance plus thank you for your help so far

Nobby

Definitely start with the Electrics. As you say start from scratch so you know what is what. I had Dan do mine as it is a dark art to me but I think not having them done when I first got the car held me up no end.

If the original builder wasn't brilliant then you will find every time you sort one thing out another will pop up but you just have to work through it when time and money permit. Due to my enforced engine change I have sorted a lot of things out that have been annoying me for years so hopefully I will only have to drive it in the future.

Cracking day on the car today

started off by changing the Big ends and mains except for the once close to bell housing and we found the rattle 8) which is a sigh of relief tbh No4 big end was totalled but luckily the crank was good No1 had just started to pick up so some one was watching over me

new oil pump, shortned pick up pipe rebuild and refit sump etc etc

then moved on to top pulley as it had siezed so that was a bit stuborn but all ended well

out with the old rad and in with a new shiney 1 a little trim of sides with just taking 5mm off each and in she went perfect fit just some other odds and sods left to do before we try it and then start the revamp properly

Just checking. Did you replace the hexagonal drive shaft for the oil pump. Sits in the top of the pump and engages/links the pump shaft to the distributor. Just looks like a one inch length of allen key with a collar round its middle.

Just seen your other post so you did!

I like seeing things put to good use.

Sorry Nobby, unfortunately not got one of that type.

Thought I might have had one from my old xr3 days as like most people I find it hard to throw things away.

but it says Lucas on the cap though now im confused

Your best bet is to make friends with a local motor factor, I use the same one all the time for every thing. We are on 1st name terms and if you do it is amazing how helpful they can be. Pop down with you cap and ask if he can ID it for you.

If you want the ultimate "fit and forget" get your self one of these, got one in my Beauford and Daimler, no points, no condenser, mine have been fitted for nearly 6 years and the caps have never been off in all that time.
