Correct static cam timing is critical. Bit of leeway on the inlet. Very little on the exhaust which is sad because there are good gains to be had from exhaust cam but only about 4 degrees to play with. My current ST engine has tiny witness marks in the top of the pistons from the exhaust valves and I did have them six degrees at one stage. Can't remember if that was advanced or retarded but it made for a very risky few extra horses. Retarded I think?
