When my 2b was rear ended by a big Jag the spare wheel hoop acted like a bumper (no spare) and transferred the impact through the chassis bending up round the back and the diff. I'd leave it be the chassis would be weakend if removed (in the event of a rear end impact)

Snap !! We were rear ended by an E-type Jag, picnic basket took the impact O.K & just a small crease in the rear panel. E-type driver was most pleased the basket had stopped him ( after very carefully inspecting car's nose ) --- I pointed out that he would have been most upset if no basket as we have a tow bar hidden under the basket.
