Whats The Law Re Position Of Clamshell Wings?

Hi,

Does anyone know the answer? :help: whats the law guys?

When fitting clamshell wings to a Robin hood kit, is it ok to have the wings slightly inside of the tyre edge?

Or does it have to be in line with the tyre or obviously over lap the tyre slightly.

Thanks everyone.

Dave.

IVA Manual will say for certain --- IMO the tread must be covered , so tyre wall can be outside wing --- but your biggest problem is the wing doesn't cover enough of the tyre to the front -- i.e needs to wrap around the front more.

Check carefully with IVA manual, don't want you to complete a copy of No6's car & fail IVA test.

As Bob said, check the IVA manual and note that there's a new version effective from 1st September 2018 ( Version 12). The wing needs to cover the full width of the tyre (not just the tread) within an angle of 30° forwards and 50° rearwards measured from the vertical centreline of the wheel. The rear of the wing must extend at least down to 150mm above the horizontal centreline of the wheel.

Simple answer to that is 'No.It's not Ok.' The full width of the tyre (not just the tread) must be covered from a vertical aspect from lines projected from centre of the axle forward and up at 30 degrees from vertical and backward and up at 50 degrees. The remainder of the rear of the 'mudguard' must not end above a horizontal line 150mm above the centre of the axle but this part of the guard does not have to satisfy the full tyre coverage rule (so can be tapered).

Main problem you will face with clamshell wings is getting full coverage at the outer edge and at the front pointy end of the wing.

As per Longboarder, that's the problem, the clamshell-type wings simply don't meet the requirements of coming down the front and back of the tyre enough. Of course you could modify or make your own wing that's got a "squarer" front profile (still, no sharp edges!) and tapers in less to the rear, and you'd be ok, but would the aesthetic of the swept wing still be acceptable? Not sure.

Thanks ever so much guys for your help and knowledge!!!

Certainly food for thought.

Moog 6 had his IVA test in 96

A friend and I have come up with a solution, we shall extend the wing out from the body via Ali box section. Achieving coverage of the wheel.

Will look great when painted. :clapping:

PS.

Will be attempting downloading pics of Moog6's image facelift on here shortly.

Sorry. What I wrote was the current IVA rules. Thought you were still building. Your car thus has approval already. If you don't go too wild with the clamshells no one will ever know. Should you ever get checked they were legal back then so historically still legal for your car. Just like semaphore indicators, authentic on your 1945 Anglia or Austin 7. Can't put them on a Mondeo but they will always be OK for vehicles of their time.
