Wiper motor issues

Hi guys i'm hoping you can help me with something we are currently stuck on, we have been having issues getting the wipers working properly to pass the IVA requirements. We only have one speed working out of the 3 options on the stick and after a bit of investigating we have found a bit of an odd set up. We have the 1984 sierra wiring loom and sierra steering column, but an unknown wiper motor which doesn't match any of the sierra wiring diagrams we have, I will add pictures below.

The wiper motor we have only has 4 wires (black, white, blue and blue/black) where as the sierra loom has 5 and after searching the part number on the internet I cant find any information on the motor itself. The main question we have is does anyone recognise it and can this be adapted to fit the sierra loom? or are we better off just trying to get our hands on a second hand sierra one that will plug straight in? We have only found one online for about £30 but its gotta come from Germany, so if anyone has an old one lying around we could be interested in buying?

Thanks in advance. Nick

I heard it's better to get it iva'd with no windscreen then there's no need for wipers or washers (fit them after you get it passed)

I'm sure someone will correct if I'm wrong

My Super spec only had one speed wipers and they're next to useless anyway

Florin's wipers are 2 speed & intermittent --- using the Ford Sierra column switch & wiper relay connected to a MINI 2 speed & park wiper motor ( plus rack & wiper boxes )  Nigel's ( Longboarder ) wiring diagram for the connections will supply the details of what goes where --- mine are long gone.

Should find Nigel's old post on here.

+1 for leaving the screen off for IVA - much simpler. I just put rubber grommets in the scuttle holes and there were no questions asked.

Probably not going to help you but I've just used the standard wiper motor kit from GBS which I think is originally a basic Lucas item but no idea if it will work with your existing loom.

Hi!

I am having similar problems with wipers.   The motor in the picture looks like a single speed Bosch; if it is the same as mine then the serial number is 0 390 216 054.   Mine looks like the picture, it is circa 1980 from a Citroen 2cv.      Having looked into adapting it to a two speed wiper by inserting a resistor into the field coil - I can't because there isn't one, only a fixed magnet.

On my car I have a particular setup tailored to the underside of the windscreen, and which will only take the said Bosch due to its size and form factor.   So I am just thinking about removing the windscreen altogether.   However, I can find no mention of not having a windscreen in the IVA manual.  Has anyone recently been able to pass their IVA without a screen?

Alternatively, do any specialists exist who can make a suitable motor up for me - and if so are there any contact details available?

Any help would be appreciated as otherwise a lot of work and money is about to go down the drain!

Cheers

Keith

Type bosch wiper motor 0390216054 into ebay. Lots of modern, front wiper motors with similar looks to yours. (modern + front = two speed and five wires). Once you know some of the cars that have similar wiper motors you could hunt your local scrapyards clutching your old motor for comparison.

Every car GBS put through the IVA has no windscreen - if the factory don't fit it with all there IVA knowledge I suggest to make life easier you do the same

Knights templar on here is the chap to give a definitive answer on weather to fit the screen or not

IVA without a screen may be easier but if GBS really do IVA all their cars without a screen it's a pretty poor show. Surely with the number of cars they're building they'd have found a repeatable solution that satisfies IVA that they can apply. Plenty of the cars on their website have screens and if I ordered a factory build, I'd expect it to be IVA'd to that condition.

Interesting discussion!     However, in the end, I am inclined to the view that if I am proposing to drive a car with a windscreen, then perhaps it ought to be tested in that way.

The IVA has proven to be a real pain for me as the original 2cv never had 2 speed wipers, immobilisers, rear fog lights  that had to be turned on each time,  headrests of sufficient height that Cobra couldn't supply,  or any of the other constraints that now apply.  Nor does it have a gearbox driven imperial measurement speedo, and the subsequent problems that has given me.  All that together with the other snag  that Burton is a Dutch company who do not have similar requirements for their IVA equivalent, and therefore are a bit nonplussed when I keep coming up with problems for their body that creates all those limitations.

Having said that, with amazing help from individuals in this club and other specialist clubs, I think I am now at a point where the car stands a good chance of passing, and giving me immense personal pleasure with what I hope will be its achievement.   I have learnt an enormous amount and even if it doesn't pass first time, I will get there!

Its a journey that has been a great trip over the last few years for an old fart like me who should have been pensioned off a long time ago....

Thanks for all your comments, guys

Keith
