Spring rates and free length

I have a Robin Hood 3a with Protech coilovers 10.5 tnch open length  and  9 tnch 180 lb springs which I feel are too stiff so I am considering going down to 160 lb springs . I am also thinking of dropping down to 8 inch length springs as at the moment I have no preload on the springs and the car is sitting too high (6.5 inches in front of rear beam mounting) does this make sense?
