1.6 pinto won't start

Can anyone help me please. I have a 2b with 1.6 pinto that won't start. Turns over great,as far as I can tell the ignition system is working. Thought it might be fuel or carb, so checked supply to carb and it seems to be OK. If I spray damp start into carb it starts and will run until damp start is used up. If I start car and carry on spraying it will keep running. Any ideas

has it got original mechanical fuel pump on front nearside of engine with fuel filter 

or are you running from electric pump

It's clearly fuel related, is there a filter somewhere that is blocked?
