I "strengthened" my scuttle with a length of wood (sanded and painted) fixed through the de-mister holes and used this to mount the rear view mirror. Wiper holes etc were covered with grommets.

No, you'll be fine. I had all the holes in the scuttle (GBS provide the scuttle like that) but I just put grommets in them and the tester didn't bat an eyelid. Many others have done the same.

You could wrap the scuttle so no holes are visible.
