Fog light functionality

If the fog lights only turn on when the headlights are on, is that enough to pass the IVA test? I have heard that the fog switch now needs to reset back to off when the ignition is turned off so that it cannot accidently be left on for next time you use the vehicle and turn the main lights on. I tested this on my modern vehicle and sure enough if does reset.

I got through IVA (in 2017) without that but I don't recall him actively testing it either.

However, I'm pretty sure that when I read the IVA manual, it was not a requirement, from my understanding, so I was never thinking about it during the test.

This is from the IVA manual -

Note 4: Either of the following scenarios will also be
considered acceptable:
􀁸 The rear fog lamp(s) may continue to operate until the
position lamps are switched off, and the rear fog
lamp(s) must then remain off until deliberately
switched on again or,
􀁸 An audible warning, additional to the mandatory telltale
light, must be activated if the ignition is switched
off or the ignition key is withdrawn and the driver's
door is opened, whether the lamps in (RS4) are on or
off, whilst the rear fog lamp switch is in the "on"
position.

Note the text in red....this is an alternative option, NOT a requirement IMO. The actual requirement only says this:

4. The rear fog lamp(s) must only illuminate when dipped beam, main beam or front fog lamps are lit (see alternatives in Notes 3 & 4)

  • 5 months later...

iv been trying to find out how the car builder solutions fog light control unit is operated ,ie is the fog light then switched on by a momentary switch or an on/off switch .if controlled by a momentary switch is it one press for on and one press for off ? if this doesn't happen how do you switch fogs off without switching headlights off and back on again .?or if its controlled by an on/off switch and you turn your lights on  then fogs on  ,then turn lights off when you put lights back on the fog light switch will still be in the on position so surely the fogs will come back on .
