When I bought my Robin Hood 2B Plus I was aware that it was registered as a 1600cc, even though it has a 2000cc engine. It was also registered as yellow, when it is in fact orange.

I did investigate the possibility of amending the engine size, but likelihood seemed to be that they would require a garage or engineers confirmation that it had been done 'properly'. Although as it has a 205 Pinto block everyone agrees that it is a 2.0l, I have never managed to persuade any garage to put pen to paper to confirm this officially. I am worried that without this I will open up a whole can of worms with the DVLA. It doesn't bother the insurance company that it is 2.0l, so in many senses it doesn't bother me. However, I think that I will get the colour changed, and am wondering about slipping the engine size in as well, hoping it goes under their bureaucracy radar.

Anyone done it, got any thoughts, or any experience of falling foul of the DVLA over this?

Not worth trying to 'pull a fast one' not that I am suggesting you are, does the engine have a number as if not you're going to struggle anyway, I've done engine swap/size sevral times without any drama, but as you say you have to get a garage to confirm the engine number & the engine size.

This is the letter I normally send

Garage Address 2

To Whom It May Concern,

As per your request to Mr MyName to provide independent verification of the engine fitted in the vehicle with registration Reg No.

The engine number is there. It is a 205 block which means that it is a 2.0l block so there is no doubt, by no one is so far willing to sign to that effect. I it seems so obvious, I don't really understand why.

Even Ford don't want to know.

That is not surprising apart from their historic department I doubt anyone would know what a Pinto engine is anyway. Have you tried, dare I even suggest it? Faecesbook Ford groups?

I changed from a 2ltr pinto to a 2ltr Vauxhall red top

I just filled in section 7 of the V5 with the new engine number and the different cylinder capacity. (1996cc to 1998cc)

The V5 came back changed to the new details. Nothing else required.

Thank you, now that is very interesting! I wonder if changing from 1600 to 2000 might make them think about it a little more.

Unfortunately with the DVLA it's often down to whomever picks up the application, they have a (or did have) a lot of agency people in there that didn't know the rules & just did stuff without understanding what they were doing, not say that is the case in this instance, but they don't seem very consistent in their approach.

I am sure that you are right . . . . . . so, not knowing the consequences of the wrong person picking it up, do I feel lucky?
