What Does Your Avatar Signify?

Well, I'll start the bidding.

I chose this fetching little picture of Mr. Bump because that is what I look like after a session in my tiny garage working on the Hood. I am unable to avoid sustaining some minor injury every time I go in there. Last week it was my head's turn for the bandages, when I straightened up too close to my engine mount and caught my bonce on the horizontal handle you use to move it about.

"Ouch. That hurt..!" I said.

As if..

From dictionary.com:

avatar

n. Syn. [in Hindu mythology, the incarnation of a god]

1. Among people working on virtual reality and cyberspace

interfaces, an "avatar" is an icon or representation of a user in a

shared virtual reality. The term is sometimes used on MUDs. 2.

[CMU, Tektronix] root, superuser. There are quite a few Unix

machines on which the name of the superuser account is `avatar'

rather than `root'. This quirk was originated by a CMU hacker who

found the terms `root' and `superuser' unimaginative, and thought

`avatar' might better impress people with the responsibility they

were accepting.

Les,

If you are the superuser or root user on a UNIX system (which, unlike your PC running Windows will be multi-user; that is, lots of people log onto the same computer) there is nothing you cannot do (to other people's files, programs, etc). Normally one user is not allowed to alter the files of another user in a multi-user system and this is implemented using access priviledges. Super users can do anything. Which I hope explains why the mythical CMU hacker decided to use a word that means "the incarnation of a god" in hindu.

Anyway, it says

an "avatar" is an icon or representation of a user [endquote] - that's pretty clear.

I started this thread because I am curious about some of the more esoteric avatars people are using, for example a pair of wasps.. what's that all about?
