Petrol Gauge Electrics

i think many people would be interested in this, especially if available in kit form.

I'd be interested if it was able to calibrate a temperature sensor (i have plans, but such an elaborate solution may not be needed).

Does anyone know if different fuel senders are atcually different resistances.....or are they all the same?? I checked a mates car today and his was exactly the same resistance as my sender at full ranges?!?

According to CAI there are 3 'standards'. They say these are used in various parts of the world. I suspect that which 'standard' a car manufacturer uses depends on where they are based, or more importantly where they source their instruments/senders from.

I did make it and installed it on my RH. It worked a treat and gave me full range on any dial. Unfortunately my GPS speedo did not do so well. It failed the MOT due to the fact that on the rolling road it registered as not going anywhere - well thats GPS for you!!! DoH!! And whoever said that was part of the MOT?

Apparently you are fine if you dont have a speedo but if you do it must work properly.......Stoopid...because it worked fine when actually moving!!

Anyway back to the question at hand - I have now unfortunately sold my RH - I thought that I would still have the design as I made several for other people...but I gave it to the guy that bought the car!!

So the answer is - unfortunately - a 'sorry I can't help you'..........Sorry - Sorry - Sorry!! I know how frustrating that problem is and was!!

It was not too difficult to solve - but due to moving house and jobs in 1 week I have little time to redo it.

Sorry,

Graeme

never thought a rolling road was part of the MOT test? just the braking efficiency.. if you have a working / accurate speedo surely that is sufficient?

Hi Neo. We seem to be in the same boat. I too bought an RH that looked at a distance to be the DB! But closeup and uncovered....Well! I am changing the dash also and fitting full electronic gauges, (to inc a fuel gauge which reqs a sender). Thought about a radio/CD but then I'd only hear it when its parked in the garage. I have carpetted the entire cabin, it looks good and has removed/deadened the "Tin Canning" effect when driving. Whoever built the car had little if no attention to detail. (If you are reading this I apologise but, It's going to take some time to clean up.) Bad wiring, bad metalwork and on taking the car to an engine specialist last Tuesday.....bad engine set-up. I'd like to show it when I've finally finished. Oh yes! it neads a boot, just a big hole at the moment. Neo I wish you luck, it will turn out to be your pride and joy.

My pride and joy.

Your problem lies with the float arm. The standard Sierra tank was quite shallow. It fitted UNDER the boot floor. You need to lengthen the float arm so it still moves through the SAME angle ie The resistance movement stays the same but the vertical travel is longer to cope with the increased depth of the Robin Hood tank. You need to fiddle about a bit with an empty tank so that with the float near to the bottom of the tank the gauge shows zero. When it hits the roof of the tank it shows full. Also most important the gauge DOES NOT RUN OFF 12 VOLTS It is fed through a voltage stabilizer that always allows 10 volts. So, when your battery is a tad flat the gauge still gets its 10 volts. See my web site for full details and part numbers. www.colinusher.info You also need to EXTEND the supply pipe for the same reasons. Leave the return as it is.
