  1. I spotted one of those a few weeks ago. You have persuaded me!Better than the old Sierra plastic thing.
  2. Ok. Curious! Just took for a run to try out all your lovely suggestions. The noise has all but gone. By the end I think it had gone. One worry to cross off the list. Maybe a bearing somewhere got a bit dry and is now lubricated? Who knows. I will persevere with checking the diff oil. Thanks all as usual for the replies. I'm sure I'll be back soon with another curiosity!
  3. No change. Are you thinking release bearing? It doesn't seem to have the symptoms that I have heard of.
  4. I was driving along enjoying a nicely running car when a noise started. Quite load in any gear. I drove home gently with no problems and the noise settled down but remained. The first thing I checked was gearbox oil. Level correct. I have driven it since. The whine or howl is related to road speed and is the same in any gear. More pronounced on acceleration but is there on deceleration. Disappears if clutch is disengaged. Now thinking diff or propshaft? No vibration. Cannot undo oil plug on diff to check. Any clues anybody?
  5. No problem. Good luck with the exmo.
  6. Hi Blue. What kind of S7 ? I may need top wishbones for my Sierra based S7. Where in London are you? David
  7. I'm sure you are right. Jib for the weekend then.
  8. Ok. So I am back to being worried. I will take it out at some stage. I have freshly painted it with the theory that any movement or cracking show show up more easily. I presume just undoing the mushroom clamp it should be removable with the front jacked up? Not sure if the anti roll bar will allow that much movement. As you can probably tell I'm not a great mechanic but willing to learn! Brakes and oil changes and tinkering. But that's why I bought it. New challenges.
  9. Update. Having done some severe clutch tests trying to make it slip it is fine! I think my theory of my son resting his foot on the clutch must have been correct. Anyway, one job crossed off the long list!
  10. Thats very useful. Comparing with the photo there must be at least 2 1/2 inches of thread in the tube. That gives me some confidence that it is unlikely to snap. There is no evidence of it actually failing yet but I will take it apart at some point. It must be effecting the geometry though but since I don`t push this car anywhere near its limit and the tyres seem to be wearing evenly i`m not too worried. I would still be interested if anybody has any though!

    E-Max Engine

Can I highjack this thread and ask what my 1.6 is? I have always assumed it is the emax as it is from a 1985 Sierra. The engine number has LS in it so I assume it is the longer stroke engine. However the block has 164 cast into it. This has always confused me. Any clues?
  12. Hopefully there are some pics attached of the top mount of my Sierra S7 RH. Where the ball joint screws into the top member it is slightly bent. I bought this last winter and noticed this a couple of months ago. There has been no movement since. I assume it was like that when I bought it. I cant believe it is from a knock as it would take a huge force and all the rest of the suspension looks good. Maybe it was bent that way by the original builder to get the geometry set up? Probably not. Should I worry? Anybody any idea how far that thread goes into the tube? I know...take it off and have a look! I need a special tool to get up to the ball joint nut I think. Looking ahead, if it is a problem, how easy would it be to repair it or should I look for a replacement. I presume these top wishbones should be a matched pair. Anybody got a couple that are lying around? I may be interested. Cheers all.
  13. Blimey. Kind offer. I'll bear you in mind for my next major problem. You are miles away though!
  14. That's a kind offer but sadly too long. I think I have found one in fleabay but was hoping for a more reliable source. They must come from a standard car but not a Sierra.
  15. Hi. One of my front brake hoses is looking a bit past it. The other one looks almost new. I am trying to source a new one but such a simple thing seems difficult. Its a sierra based S7 and the existing hose is approx 28cm long from caliper entry to bulkhead. It goes straight into the body side. Does anybody know a good source? Are the fitments sizes anything unusual or are they universal? Thanks everyone. David
  16. I should up date this because the slipping went away. I suspect my very tall son who cannot rest his foot under the clutch pedal was resting it on the pedal. He denies it! It was him who reported the problem but I have had no slipping since. Maybe he overheated it and glazed it. I suppose it is possible that the adjuster got out of whack somehow and my fiddling solved that . Anyway..happy days. No new clutch needed...for now.
  17. All done. Nice easy job. Gear lever back to normal height.
  18. Aha..I feared that. I will take much care! Many thanks.
  19. I noticed that my gear lever had dropped so looked under the car and the gearbox mount has perished. Have got a replacement . Looking at the old one, it's a type 9 box, there is a bolt through the middle. This is bent as it grounded a couple of times when dropped. Before I get under the car to tacklee the job, can anyone tell me the construction? Is that centre bolt attached to the box somehow? Or a separate cross member? May have to replace it or just cut off the bent end. Prior knowledge is always handy! Thanks.
  20. No problem. Thought I may be too late. Thanks anyway.
  21. I may be after a top suspension arm if yours is a mark 1 or 2 Sierra s7? One of mine is a little bent. Any chance? David
  22. Or bigger tyres? Just a thought. This is going to be my solution as I have room in my arches to increase the size. I'm just waiting to wear mine down a bit as I'm a cheapskate!
  23. Thanks for all the suggestions. All taken on board. Yes there are 2 fixing points on each tube. Both will be beefed up. The copper pipe was handy when I came up with the idea and i will replace with some steel tube as suggested. At the moment I think any headrest is better than none. It feels solid and the final version will be more so.
  24. Here are some pictures of the headrests. Hopefully you can see the method. I realize that I need to beef up the fixings with some proper bolts etc because I only used self tappers just to prove the fitting would work.
  25. Still very new to all this but I thought would post my headrest mod. My s7 came with the original Rh seats and I have always been bothered with the lack of headrests in case of a rear shunt. New seats opened up a host of issues. Mainly the distance between steering wheel and seat which is only just sufficient to drive. I have raised it as much as it will go without changing the dash. Also I'm a cheapskate! So I bought a leather pair of Ka headrests for a tenner. The stalks fit perfectly into 15mm chrome pipe. I bolted the pipes to the bulkhead behind the seat and through 2 chrome pipe brackets which are bolted to the cross member which runs behind to seat tops. Hey presto! A little crimp in the pipes and they are fully height adjustable and the tonneau cover even fits. Will try and post some pics if anyone interested. This may be amateur stuff to the majority but I'm quite chuffed! Still lots of cosmetic work to do on the car but it runs very sweetly.
