  1. Hi, Does any one have any experience of the 2b sliding pillar to wishbone conversion available from kitspares? Or can recommend a welder to attach the brackets in the North West (I’m Wigan based). Does the kit come with drawings? - how easy was it etc. I recently picked up my 2b as I dip my toe into the exciting world of kit cars. But the state of the local roads has resulted in the inside of the wheels being gouged by the bottom of the suspension. Didn’t spot it when looking at the car - but then I haven’t checked the back wheels to see if they were swapped prior to sale I’ve just picked up a spare Pinto with ported head. FR32 cam and GPZ600 carbs and manifold, but I’d better sort this first!
  2. Leave it until after IVA or you'll never get the car finished. Sliding pillar conversion has been widely covered before, have a read through some of these threads: https://www.rhocar.org/index.php?/search/&q="pillar conversion"&search_and_or=or The GBS comes with instructions, if you could get hold of a set of these, it would be a good starting point.
  3. Hello all. I had a conversation with one of my area members recently regarding converting his 2B from sliding pillar to double wishbone suspension. I converted my 2B about 12 years ago using mainly bespoke parts. He tells me that GBS do a kit for the conversion. I can’t remember the price he said it was but it seemed reasonable to me. Have any of you used this kit? And how was it? Is there anyone else out there that does a conversion kit or will do the conversion? Thank you in advance for any advice, comments, and opinions.

    2b Sliding Pillar Conversion

My 2B has sliding pillar susepnsion but the way it has been set up in my eyes will last 5 seconds on the road. Im wanting to do a conversion but cant really find any info on it Where to get parts for it etc. ive looked through Tony's conversion and have a idea how to do everything but not really sure on where to start with Parts for the conversion. Be great if someone could point me in the right direction.
  6. Just fitting conversion to sliding pillar on 2b will i still be able to use the oroginal long wings or will i have to fit the smaller gaurds cheers ray goddard
  7. I have a 2B sliding pillar and have been running it for just over 12 months now (bought a finished project) Has anybody out there done this conversion from scratch? I am looking for some drawings and geometary in order to fabricate my own. Does anyboby know if there any available, if so where? Thanks
  8. OK, here's the progress of the conversion. To recap, I have a conversion set of wishbones and shocks, am doing as much of the donkey work as possible and then getting a professional to do the clever bits. The chap doing the clever part, Colin, is pretty experience in Hoods having worked with RHSC to develop the prototype RH race cars. My confidence was further bolstered the first time we met when he walked up and said: "That's a Robin Hood 2B sliding pillar. Robin Hoods are awkward ****** ******* ******* **** * ** ******** * * ************* cars to work on and I'm amazed anyone gets them through SVA." I warmed to the chap instantly So, the front end stripped down and ready for the expert to attack Georgie with the scapel (or angle grinder as some like to call it ) At the moment, she's on the stands looking a bit sorry for herself but is taking heart by being surrounded by a couple of Hoodies, Ferrari, Porsche, Cooper racers, Mustangs and various other exotica. I think I actually saw her flirting with a Westie before I gave her a stern look Next job was getting some hubs as the bottom joint on mine is ground off to accomodate the Sliding Pillar setup. Again, Colin came up trumps with a pair of beautifully prepared, reconditioned ones with new bearings off the shelf. Result!! So, it's a Green light for Colin to do his bit which is why this post is here. From the people that have done the conversion, where have you put the mounts. We think we know how we're going to mount it but was wondering how everyone else attacked it?
  9. I've posted this in the main forum but in case anyone hasn't seen it. I am looking for a company or individual in the South that is capable of swapping the suspension from Sliding Pillar to Wishbone. I have the kit but am not confident with welding the new set on. Any ideas?
  10. Can anyone recommend someone in the South East that would be capable of converting my sliding pillock to wishbone? I got Georgie on the road at the weekend and although I've only done a couple of hundred miles, I have no confidence whatsoever in the front end. On 2 occassions she has sniffed a bump in the road and jumped out of the way in a most unsettleing manner. Has anyone used a company in the South East (or near)? Regards

    Wishbones identification

Hi, it looks quite a bit like the 2b sliding pillar conversion kit I’m looking at fitting. https://www.kitspares.co.uk/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=1101 if so kit spares would be your best bet
  12. Guys, I have received a number of requests for info on my conversion. Sorry, but I can't help much. The kit came from RS Jigtec, who are no longer in business. Bob.
  13. I've just got off the phone from MNR (Mark Nordon Racing). I was hoping to buy their sliding pillar to wishbone conversion kit. Unfortunatly, they don't sell it anymore for various reasons. Not only that, but they won't sell the wishbones and other componants without a chassis. I can understand the reasoning behind it, but I really liked those bones. What is everyone else doing who wants to wishbone their chassis? I haven't seen any posts about conversions recently. I really liked the easy camber adjuster on the wishbones. GTS have a similar system on their wishbones. Their quality is supposed to be spot on as well. I had one idea where I would make up a book 'Ron Champion' front end, and then do a cut and shut. This would mean that, it would have tried and tested steering/suspension geometry. Not sure if the strength of the join between round tube and box section would be ok though? The other problem is that it'd be lots more work! Any ideas?

    Sliding Pillar Conversions

Hello I have a sliding pillar setup and wanted to get it converted to the newer wishbone design. Who does sliding conversions? I know Robin Hood do a good conversion. Is there anybody else doing the same, or is it best to stick with Robin Hood? I live in the South West so the Robin Hood factory is quite a long drive. Thanks

    Castor, Camber, Track

Hi I bought a Sealy castor camber gauge from Ebay for about £30, it seems to do the job fine. I'm also getting some Sealy laser tracking gear, which has still not arrived. Setting the tracking is not a problem provided I know whhow many degrees it's supposed to be. Worst case scenario is I take it to Quickfit and pay £17 for them to ajust the tracking. I'm not impressed with drive over type tracking gear, I've tried it in the past and found it to be not very reliable or accurate. Quickfit could also do the castor and camber, if it was possible to adjust. My 2B is an old sliding pillar conversion. Whoever converted it didn't know what they were doing. I haven't driven the car as yet due to illness, but my brother has taken it for a spin and he reckons it handles like a pig on stilts. When I checked things out castor, camber and tracking were all over the place and impossible to improve without major work. I think I've got to grips with it now and I'm going to extend the dummy strut and make a new shorter top wishbone. I've drawn everything up in Acad and run some simulations, it appears to work well. I just have to brave the cold and get into the workshop. Alan

    2b Front Suspension

Hi Ali I see how they have done it now. You have some serious limitations there as identified. This is the first prototype Sliding Pillar conversion we have ready. In these pictures it is just tacked in place while we concentrated on getting the correct layout. I don't know the specific angles (have someone far more intelligent working that out) but basically you are looking to have a convergence point (if you continue the line of the wishbone in) below the vehicle itself. As I said, this is a prototype so looks a bit rough but you get the general idea. We have also opted to put continuous bars with the wishbones connected to thus ensuring strength and accuracy. For someone doing a conversion, they will have to do 4 cuts and 12 small welds to transfer from Sliding Pillar to Double Wishbone and then just bolt the suspension on. The final Wishbones will look very different and these are really rough but you get the general idea.
  17. Glad you enjoyed the Dunsfold visit. I wasn't feeling at all well that day. Must have been a touch of swine flu For the record, we have nearly finalised the design for the 2b sliding pillar conversion and are hoping to be providing a completed kit including brackets wishbones, bolts, bushes, dampers and springs along with some nice and straightforward destructions in the near future. Price will be between £400-£500
  18. I wonder if we could use the ones Richard developed for his sliding pillar conversion or a variation of them?
  19. Ive done a few track days at Brands in mine, also a sliding pillar conversion with Gaz shocks, using standard Sierra rear suspension, with a well tweaked 2.0 Pinto & michelin Exalto tyres. The days had a mixture of Caterhams, Elises, Exiges, westfields, daxs, tigers, a Noble, porkers, beemers, XJs, & a few hot hatches. The only cars I couldnt match round bends (or on the straights!) were the Exiges. I could corner quicker than the Elises, but they were quicker on the straight. The Dax had a V8 & was all over everything on the straight, but me, the elises & exiges were faster on the corners. The Caterhams were nowhere.....not because the cars werent capable, but to a man (&several girls) the drivers werent up to it! Make sure the front suspension settings are right & fit decent tyres & these things will fly. Bob

    Wishbones 2b

    Gaz Shocks

If you have mounted the coilovers further from the lower balljoint, this reduces the effective spring rate, which is probably why you are having problems. Stick with the same rate springs, but move the bottom mount outwards with longer coilovers. I ahve 350 rate springs on my sluiding pillar conversion to wishbones. I think they are mounted slightly further out than wishbone 2bs, so you shouldn't need to go above this spring rating. The dohc is lighter than a pinto.
