Just Fitted The Cart Axle Bearing To The Steering 2B Mod

Just to say another successful cart bearing install to replace a worn seirra steering bush.

If you don't know about this its worth doing at some point. On the 2b the original sierra bush is used to support the steering column at the pedal box end. This wears out and becomes a bit sloppy.

its all written here http://nw.rhocar.org...ering_shaft.htm with pictures. thanks.

I bought my bearing and carriers off ebay for about £10 and they were really good quality and being axle bearing they are never going to wear out doing this job.

My bearing bush was worn enough that i just tapped it in to the bearing. Had to do a lot! of modifying the original bracket as i got 3 hole brackets and i wanted everything in the same place as before.

worth doing if you need to replace that bush

Can you give me an idea what to type in the ebay search box as everything I try either brings 0 results or thousands!!

cheers

Hi,

had a look through my ebay history and found the ones i used.

Both have ended now as it was a long time ago but if you go into his shop he has them re-listed, although sadly slightly more expensive now (but still reasonable.

as said i went with the 3 bolt carrier but i see no reason why you can't use the 2 bolt one which might be easier to get at once in the car.

I bought the 3 bolt carrier but could not get in to drill the 3rd hole, so would recommend the 2 hole. Being claustrophobic and head first down in my footwell didn't help, especially when using the angry grinder to remove the old bracket.

i'll try and get a picture if it isn't raining tomorrow. Not sure if this is the best way but the way i did it for my 2b was by modifying the original 2b hanger/bracket. The bracket has a hole in it but this is not big enough for the bearing carrier to sit in properly so i chopped it a bit and welded some more metal on to make it the correct size.

The carrier should sit in the hole so that the flat bits sit nicely on the edges of the bracket.

I then welded three bolts onto the bracket so that i could just put the carrier over the bolts and then just put some nuts on from the front in the engine bay (would be easier with the 2 bolt one).

Bolted the bracket back in, bearing and carrier in with the steering column in the correct place, tighten nuts onto the carrier to lock it all in place, job done.

hope that makes sense.
