i'm just about to drill the holes to bolt in the gearbox but the drive shaft isnt quite straight left to right, is this normal? thanks Tom.

This is quite often the case and providing the output from the box and the input to the diff are both pointing straight for and aft and not at an angle across the car then both UJ's will be twisting the same amount but in opposite directions hence cancelling out each others cyclic variations.

You may find there is a bigger height difference than a left and right issue.
