I have got a 54 reg 206 xsi, a couple weeks ago the powersteering momentarily stopped working and then continued to work and it hasnt been a problem since. Yesterday about 3 times when i started up i had a chime sound but no warning messages anywhere. Does anyone know what this may have been as its going ok again.

The electric one on my Dad's school Punto went, it's the motor overheating. It has a cutout on it & on his it would cut out & you'd need to restart it to get it working again.

Bad news was it was an expensive fix. My brother in Law's punto has it too but he lives with it because of the cost to fix. Happens most on full lock.

on old 106 gti the relay gave problems. you could try replacing that. from memory it was a standard car relay. repacing the pump isnt too hard or expensive if you buy one from a scrappy. I had to replace that too but cant remember if the problem was the relay or the pump.

was intermittent also btw.

Salty Monk, re the Punto Power steering: according to the Manchester Evening News the other day, nine (I think that was the figure) Puntos in the Altrincham area have had their entire steering wheels and columns nicked recently - probably as they are electric and are around £500 to replace!
