in the end I took the existing one out, carefully opened it up (they are sprung), took it apart (taking photos along the way), cleaned the contacts with WD40 and a small wire brush and bosh ! its all good again!

Does anyone know where I could get hold of a replacement sierra ignition switch? tried eBay and a search of the internet but to no avail.
