Cosworth T5 Mt75 Gearbox

A T5 box from a Sierra Cosworth and an MT75 are different gearboxes.

Basically the problem is with fitting the rear of the gearbox between the two uprights in the 2B chassis.

An MT75 is mush wider at the rear and will only fit those chassis designed for it. I.e. the 2B DHOC or the superspec.

A T5 gearbox has a very simular if not the same tailshaft housing as a type 9. It should fit but the measurements I made weren't that accurate. I believe Scott has a US version from a mustang he is going to put in a lightweight, he might be able to give a more definitive answer. Though I believe the lightweight was also designed to take an MT75 and the mustang version of the T5 has a different tailhousing!

Why do you want to put a T5 gearbox in your 2B? The type 9 should be strong enough for most pintos, are you going turbo? I though there were better options than the T5 for other engines when the type 9 got too weak?

Tim is correct. I am putting in a US-based T-5, z/cobra spec (T5z)

I posted on here the dimensions, as i had the exact same question about the l/w...whether it would fit!!! You can look up the thread, but since the tranny is sitting in my living room ;), i figured it would be easier to just re-measure it.

In general, the Type9 & T5 are somewhat similar size and weight. However, I believe the T5z is much stronger than the Type-9. I believe the early (both non-WC and WC) T5's (like the cosworths) are also stronger than the Type-9, though no-where near as strong as the T5z. Oh, i found one of the other threads, where i had listed a heirarchy of strength's/hp-ratings of the different T5's:

http://community.rhocar.org/index.php?show...hl=cossie&st=30

Anyway, here are the dimensions (based on me wielding a tape measure, so approximate):

Note1, the dimensions for the main-body are standard for a WC T5, but i am not sure whether the cossie T5 is WC.

Note2, the tail sections vary, but i gave dimensions for the one i have, which is fairly common.

Input Shaft: 7 1/4" x 1 1/16" x 10 spline (US-based; believe UK is different)

Total length: 24 1/8" (minus input shaft)

Main-Section: 9 1/4" Long x 10 1/4" Height.

Main-Section: Front Width: 9" on top; 7 3/8"on bottom. Back Width: 7 1/4" Top, 7 1/2" at widest (where tail bolts)

Tail: 14 7/8 Long. See the main-section for width at front. After about 5" (14 1/4" from front of main body), it tapers down to about 3 5/8". ie, the tail section gets fairly narrow pretty quickly. It is about 19" from the front of main to the center of the shift-box.

HTH.

Cheers, -sm

Cheers lads.

The reason I want to fit this type of gearbox is I have bought a cossy turbo engine and have been told I would total the sierra box.

I had a 2lt pinto engine in with 140bhp but with this in it should do 0 to casulty rather quick. Ive bought the engine so I guess Im past the point of no return and need to get the big hammer out in good old rh style

If you are fitting the cossie turbo you will need something a bit stronger than a type 9!

As I said I believe a T5 should fit ok, the Sierra T5 gearbox was specially modified to fit in a Sierra.

Just to concur with the other replies. I've put a cossie with a t5 into my 2b. The only problem was that the mounting points are slightly different. From memory I had to bolt a piece of metal between the 2 provided mounting brackets. IF YOU'RE BUILDING A HOOD, THIS MOD IS EASY. Didn't actually eman to shout there.

Have you mounted the engine yet with another box? have you used a 4wd manifold?

Hi paul.

No the engine only came on tuesday and is in bits, I need a sump turbo ecu loom ect ect. Most of the sensers came with it are new in boxes so finding out what part of the engine they belong is going to be fun as I have never seen undre a cossy hood before. Did you use the cossy sump and if so did you have it shortened, I had to do this with the pinto sump. I think I have emailed you before about cossys and that is what set me of [ so its your fault].

yours paul

ps would you mind if I bent your ear from time to time because Im sure I will hit snags.
