I thought my first step was to remove sparking plugs and check colour-scheme of the business ends - brown electrodes and black around the edges of threads. Big surprise was to find No. 1 plug loose! No idea how this happened. So cleaned everything up thoroughly, including the holes into the head, checked the gaps (few minor adjustments needed) and put the plugs back.

Before moving on to another area to check, I took the car for a spin around the lanes. Although the popping was still evident, it was a nicer noise somehow and the car ran a little better. Think I will leave well alone for the time being!

Question: Do you think that a loose plug could allow air into the engine on the overun, and then make the popping sound nastier?

Cheers
