V6 Engine Options

I'm thinking of using a V6 2.8 in somthing and have a few questions :-

- is it easy to change a Sierra XR4*4 into 2WD?

- is the Sierra XR4i exactly what I need anyway?

- is a Granada 2.8i any good?

- are they all manual gearboxes?

Hi Guy, I considere this route at the beginning but quickly changed my mind. All ford V6 engines are very heavy being cast iron blocks and heads, won't help the handling of a hood much.

Xr4x4 have a drop box for the front drive, you will need to replace the box with something else. MT75's would work I believe, there is an adapter plate for MT75 for pinto as well as my fatherin law has a pinto engined transit with MT75 which has this adapter plate.

Back to V6's, the engine mounts may be aproblem and I don't know if they fit, watch out for the sump also.

No they are not all manuals, in fact most of the granada V6's were auto, a freind of mine is building a 2B pinto auto and the mods he had to make to the chassis to get it in were heewge!! His other half is slightly disabled and can't drive a manual so they had to do it that way. I'd be interested to see if anyone else has done this as my neighbour is building a SubK and is considering changing for a 2.3 V6 after SVA (2.3 cause he has one available)

Thanks for that Paul, I was actualy thinking of getting a Sumo cobra rep kit and was after a suitable engine & G box without choping and changing too much. I'd like the Sierra as a donor because I know it well and would like to use a V6 from one.

I figured that if I can build a Robin Hood then I can build anything!

Howdy Guy!

I think that Tony Maidment (East Hoods Secy) is putting a Granada V6 in his Hood at the moment.

Haven't managed to make many mtgs this year (Sorry! :( ) so don't know how it's going - Tony??

Cheers,

F.

Hi.

I'm in the east hoods as well.

Tony has finished the V6 insulation and it is running well.

He had to change some bits to improve cooling I.e rad fan, bonnet vents.

I believe he's had some problems with his clutch.

Piddy.

I had a look for Tony in the members list, he's only done one post and no WWW site, but it can be done.

This is what I've found out,

The 2.8 4x4 has a 4wd version of the type 9 gearbox.

the 2.9 4x4 has a 4wd version of the MT75 gearbox.

So I should simply be able to change them for the 2WD version? right?

If you realy want to use a V6 over the Pinto

I would reccomentd the Granda Scorpio Cosworth V6 24v

I was offered one for £850.., I think the engine is baed on the Essex V block - but much different..

There are some V6 ( Scopio cosworth) cylinder heads and plenum on Ebay..

good luck
