Brake Compensator

Personally, I don't think so. I fitted it originally but removed it and tidied up the brake runs later - with absolutely no ill effects.

In any event, I don't know how you can get the mounting angle correct for your particular car's weight/springs/front rear weight split etc.

(You do mean the inertia restrictor thingy in the back brake line I presume?)

I have used a PCRV (pressure concious regulating valve) which you will find screwed into any non ABS mondeo master cylinder and fitted it in line between the master cyl and the the rear brake line to the tee piece. For this you need to get a female M12x1.25 brake tube nut, make sure you fit it in the same way round as was in the Mondeo, it works really well, tried it loads of times in the side road next to the house and the fronts allways lock before the rears.

Dave, the need seems to depend a bit on what donor brakes you've got.

My 1.6 donor gave me front discs and rear drums. I fitted them to the 2b without changing a thing, but I left the compensator out.

they work fine, the front always locks up first, passed SVA with no comments.

Have you got a later set up, such as all disc, ?

Hi.

My doner was a 2 ltr with vented front disc's and drums to the rear.

I never used the compensator.

My car passed SVA and now three MOT's without any problems at all.

My front wheels always lock up before the back.

My personal feeling is it a lot of hassle fitting this device to no affect.

Piddy.

I've got a 1.8 pinto engine, vented front disks and rear drums. Mine failed the SVA on rear brakes locking up before the front. I fitted the valve and set it up by leaving enough brakepipe to allow the valve to pivot (slotted one of the mounting holes). It was easy to set up, by doing an emergency stop and adjusting the angle until the fronts locked up first. This satified the SVA.

My advice is to try it first and fit it only if you need it.

One word of warning, don't fit a motorsport type adjustable brake bias valve, it will fail the SVA(I know because I did it) they don't allow them because the valve can be adjusted back to allow the rears to lock first,(though why anyone would want to do this I don't know) the same applies for a brake pedal bias bar.

Twoscoops,

I have Robin hood supplied discs and calipers on the front, (these are from an orion/ Escort I found out later) and doner drums on the back. The valve looks just like a cylinder and is screwed directly in to the master cylinder, Metros have them attached to the dash panel screwed into a tee piece. Lots of cars use them as they are cheaper and just as effective as the G valve used on earlier Escorts and Sierras. Even earlier cars never had one at all, Mk 1 escorts for example, but the brakes on those did not have to perform with such a varied GVW like modern cars and did not go as fast etc etc....

Hope that helps.

Thanks for all your replies....the only reason i asked was that i've got disc's all round and I wanted to make sure thatthe rears didn't lock up first.

Glad you mentioned about the in line bias valve as this was the route i was going to follow...

Cheers

T.
