Water Pump Gasket

water pump on my 2.0 pinto started leaking over the winter.

 

treated it to a nice shinny new one...

 

first attempt ( no sealant just the gasket ) and it leaked at the top

 

second attempt ( found some blue hermatite lying around in the garage, gave the gasket a light coating each side and fitted ) all OK until it got up to temp and now has a small leak again at the top.

 

any suggestions for getting a good seal on attempt three

sounds like there is still a bit of the old gasket on the block, or a score where someone has used something to prise the pump off before. I have used the old red stuff before, also check that the bolts tighten fully and aren't bottoming out

We always us instant gasket on all water pumps as well as the paper one just a light coating on both sides of the gasket.

no just what ever the factors have in

also check that the bolts tighten fully and aren't bottoming out

 

replaced the bolt nearest the leak with a shorter one - so far its looking good

 

of course this was after a trip to the motor factor - more spare bits......
