The Engine Is Back!

I have just rebuilt my 2litre Pinto (I have rebuilt V8's and most 4 pots since the seventies) it is running strong on bike carbs and has done a 100 or so miles this weekend.

I would suggest that the oil pump was not primed so the engine was running on the oil used in the assembly.

I use an electric drill and after assembling the eng and before fitting the distributer. Use a 6 mm socket on the oil shaft and rotate clockwise and this will fill the oil ways with oil prior to starting. At first the shaft will spin easily but you feel imediatly the resistance when the pressure is built up.

Good luck from now on.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely be doing this before I reluctantly turn the key for the first time.

Hi quite agree with trackerjack re priming the lube system but I use the starter motor i.e. engine in place , no plugs , ign discon , fuel line to pump discon , motor it over till oil press registers ,connect ign and fuel fit the plugs and if you have timing and fueling some where close it will fire up ,thats the way I've done it on every thing between 850 minis to14litre V10 deisels .But remember the FIRST rule of engine build i.e. CLEANLINESS if you don't you will get severly bitten !!bye for now ,mowerman
