Wiring Light To Voltmeter

Wired in a voltmeter the other day and all working well. However, today tried to wire in the light module using the power from the old ford type rear fog switch. Did a dry run and tested and the light came on and went off with the stalk switch. Then put the bulb holder into the back of the meter and it blew the fuse. Am I right in thinking that I reversed the polarity as the outer part of the bulb holder contacts the containing sleeve. ? turning them the other way round will cure. Or am I just dim (probably!). Also affected the o/s front indicator with only the rear and side repeater working. Disconnected the wires and everything working correctly apart from now no dash illuminating lights at all!! The usual start up lights on the panel all work OK

HELP. Any advice would be appreciated
