Facts And Figures

I believe a diesel raced at LeMans!!!!!!!!!

Indeed it did, though I'm not sure that "raced" was the correct term for it. It was more of a publicity stunt than a serious contender. For a start it was one of the quietist cars on the track - I could just about hear its turbo wirring away as it went past.

I'm surprised that you lot think the Diesel escort might be expensive to run. It's prety poor for a Diesel, but it still out performs most petrol cars on fuel consumption.

id guess that you probably do more miles in the diesel escort which would make it cheaper but it all depends on whats gone wrong with what and how much it cost to repair but id have a guess at around 52p?

Glad its not just me
At least we've at last found some common ground, which we ,hic,

Bill and Ian it seems to me a much better idea to have a few beers rather than trying to guess running costs which don’t matter any way as when it needs petrol you put it in even paying 10p extra for the good stuff just cos it might go better :p ;)

i do a 40 ile round trip to work and back in the tin top (ROVER 416) costs me £25 quid a week put £10 my next door neighbours s7 last weekend and used most of it going to newark and back flat out at ?? in fourth gear so i suppose it all depends how you drive . but on diesel that off white stuff can get you a lot further per pence if your not scared of getting dipped :boohoo: :boohoo:

Ok, well here's the figures. Including literally everything bought for the car, including insurance, tax, and purchase costs, the escort has cost 20.04 pence per mile, and the 2B has cost 81p/mile. However, the escort has a value of around 500 quid, and the 2B should fetch at or about 5000, and if you take those away then the 2B has cost 25.9p/mile and the escort only 15.9p/mile. Both of these are way below any figures which the AA quote for running a car.

So the conclusion is .... erm .... well I guess I started out to show that running a kit car isn't as expensive as most people would think, but then again you guys already knew that coz you've got one.

I do think its fairly important to keep a grip on the money side, and likewise with time. There's no point in letting a kit car take over your life (or worse still, take over your life and still not get built), and equally it has to be affordable. Money is not a bottom-less pit - for me at least. When I started off I didn't know how much it would cost, and I thought it would cost a lot less than it has. Figures like these (for the 2B at least) would have been useful to me at the outset, so that's why I kept track of them, and that's why I mention them every now and again. Same with logging time. Nobody could give me "hours to build a Robin Hood" when I started. Obviously every hood is different and the decisions each builder makes along the way are different too, but hopefully it gives a "stake in the ground" for other people to consider when they're starting off. Mine's not the best 2B out there, but I think its a long way from the worst. In many ways it's neither better nor worse, but just different. It's not the cheapest either, but nor is it the most expensive.

So anyway, apologies to those who simply aren't interested. You can always ignore topics I guess. And hopefully someone else will say "is that all?" and order a kit tomorrow ;-)

Maybe its time to go back to the beer
