im thinking of painting the exhaust manifold and my previous attempts include hammerite and engine laquer but both burnt off straight away.

I have had a look at different paints which all have different temperature ratings.

how hot would a carbed pinto get?

What you need is "cam coat". It's a ceramic based paint. Not only do you get a nice finish, but you also get a ceramic coating which acts as a heat retention system - like exhaust wrap. I did my entire exhaust with the satin black finish and I'd recommend it. You do need to apply it professionally though as the parts must be shot blasted, and the paint must be sprayed. I did this at work, but most body shops could do it for you if need be. The chrome finish also needs oven baking. The paint is about 30 quid for a tin which was plenty for my whole exhaust and a friends CVH manifold.

it says on the can that i should sand it down first.....

does this mean give it a quick sand to make i smooth or actually get all of the rust off and back to the metal? (how thick is the standard pinto manifold? ;) )

Managed to get the manifold off after a bit of persuasion.

Had a go at sanding it down (much to my dads amusement) but I've now given it to him to get it sandblasted at work. Should have it back sometime next week and il paint it and put the pics on then.

Heres what it looks like at the moment.
