Alternator - I'm Lost !

Hi All - calling expert electrical gurus ! :D

This time - the Hood is OK - but the wife's Escort is not.

The red charging warnign light came on . Me thinks alternator as quick test shows no charging (11.74 Volts on battery when running) . Belt in place and OK. So fit new alternator - to find same problem !

I have fitted a wire direct from an ignition feed to the "D" connection (warning light link) - and with this in place the charging is OK - but the warning light does not show at all - because I've run around it. Strangley the water temperature gauge now reads max as soon as the ignition is turned on.

According to the wiring diagram the warnign light is fed by an ignition feed that feeds about 20 things in the back of the instrument cluster. There's a small box shown adjacent to the alternator warning light feed that is joined before and after the light - but there's no description of what it does ?

Any clues out there ?

(It's a '97 Escort 1.8 Zetec SI)

Hi Graham

At work at the moment (you may ask if so why am I on the forum? Well, it's my extended tea break.....anyway, I'm branch manager, so there B) ) So when I get home I'll have a squint at the wiring diagram in my Escort Haynes. Possibly sounds like a printed circuit prob.

Cheers Matey.
