Turbo Diesel Problem

I know this is nothing to do with my Sub-K, but I have been having major problems with my everyday car and wondered if any of you have heard of this problem before.

Car is a Passat turbo diesel (130 BHP version). Just before Christmas the turbo cut out on it completely going up a hill overtaking a lorry. Very scary. Lost all power.

Since then it has been doing some strange things (the garage have worked on it for about 3 days but still can't sort it out) When it first fires up all is fine. The turbo cuts in as it should. After about 10 mins the turbo boost comes in later and later in the rev range until eventually it no longer cuts in at all, and I'm left driving a seriously underpowered car. Strange thing is, if I switch off the electrics (either whilst driving or stationary) and then flick them on again the turbo cuts in normally for about 20 seconds and then stops again. Although there is no boost you can still hear the turbine going round and winding down when I stop the car.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Graeme.

Very similar happened to me , although a mondeo on mine it was after two weeks checking..... ..the accelerator cable. in the midle of the cable on mine is a spring compensator in a plastic case mine had stretched . I found this by disconnecting the throttle and working the pump by hand the revs shot up and you will hear the turbo if its at all similar

Had exactly the same on a Golf TDi (Same engine) - turned out to be an intermittent sensor fault, can't remeber which one though..

I guess the garage have taken a download from the ECU - should give them a fighting chance of getting it right eventually, it did take VW a few goes to get mine sorted..

It's not fun having to turn off the ignition at 90 on the M11 to get the turbo back, is it !

My V70 Volvo diesel had a similar problem. I went to an independent volvo specialist and he immediately told me it was the air flow meter. Apparently, Volvo's of about 1998 vintage had a problem with these failing. Interestingly enough Audis have the same problem as they share common parts. It may be VW has the same issue?

My Vauxhall Astra oil burner suffered a similar problem, the airflow sensor was failing intermittently. The dealer said "It shuts the turbo down to protect its self" :gdit: Pity it did not consult me in the matter, I was into 3 figures, overtaking, on the A46 with no run off area. At least I had something warm to sit in !!! :boohoo:

I had a similar problem on a Landrover. It turned out to be the intake hose had delaminated and would collapse inwards when working hard. Not visible externally and returned to normal when the load was taken off.

If all else fails try asking about the amnel valve, all turbos should have a similar one to control boost, usually electric on those cars and if faulty could stick up and give u no boost.
