Steering Universal Joints

series3

Recommended Posts

My father has fitted a few universal joints to the steering on our series 3a! the thing is that it has a notch of moving. The wheel is very freely moved but on a certain point you can feel a notch from the universal joint

Will this be a problem on the SVA????

It could well be. Take it back off and try to find out why it is jamming that is of course assuming you are not trying to operate it through too greater angle as you say it is new it should work smoothly through its full range if not take it back and get it replaced.

Hi

Mine has just failed on this point. The older 2B's need a wedge on the steering rack to tiilt it back about 10 degs. The universal joint just cannot cope with the angles. Later models had the rack mounting tilted up which makes the job a lot easier. I have covered this point in some detail at www.colinusher.info Use a 25 thou feeler gauge to check clearances at all points of rotation. Any binding will cause "notchy" steering.

Move your arms in & out with it??

Wouldn't have thought this was possible, is everything bolted together tight? Have you got a jubilee clip where the 2 parts of shaft join?
