I have had a response form VOSA see below Dear Tim, Many thanks for your enquiry, I have been asked to respond. Please accept my apologies for the late reply, the department is very busy at this time. The situation as it stands with regards to these vehicles is as follows; Following an examination of one of these vehicles at Southampton SVA testing station, the examiner identified areas of the vehicle that caused concerns with regards to its basic design. The areas of concern being those of the seat belt anchorage points, the suspension mounting points and the ability of the structure to withstand the forces and vibrations to which it is likely to be subject…

Hi anyone have any experience of getting a canopy roof through the IVA? , I am aware of the requirement for E marked windscreen which I have . I know there are issues with getting a Vw nova through these days? ( I am not building a nova but it also has canopy roof). I am looking at recycling an aircraft fighter jet canopy or part of , for part of the roof . I understand this might be acceptable for roof and pax side windows , but not driver side windows . This defines the whole build so needs to be right From the start . it’s going to be tandem seating . i had a search and couldn’t see anything on this , if I missed it apologies and Thanks in advance .

Hello everyone, My name is Bernard and I own a Robin Hood kit car that was registered in the Netherlands in 2004. The car is right-hand drive, so the build probably started in the UK, although I’m not completely sure. The car was on the road in the Netherlands from 2004 to 2011. I bought it almost four years ago and I have been trying to register it in Belgium ever since. After nearly three years of paperwork, I’m finally close to completing the process. The Belgian authorities are now asking for the maximum axle weights (front and rear) for the vehicle. They require this information from either: a manufacturer’s manual a tech…

  6. I’m looking for advice on where I can find someone or a company that can do the necessary inspections for forms 19A and B. In or around the Leeds/Yorkshire area. Thanks Dave Read

Hi all, For IVA can the VIN number and chassis plate both be riveted to the chassis or do I need to weld or stamp? I am hoping that I can stamp a sheet of metal for the VIN, then rivet to chassis and also stamp a chassis plate and then also rivet that to the chassis.

Hello All, I am new to the kitcar world, but have recently bought a kitcar (lolocost IRS) which seems to be correctly registered, MOT'd etc. however, i did not get an SVA certificate with the car. Is it important to have this, or can I assume that everything is fine assuming that the registration is fine? the car was first built in 2002, then modified in 2011 to house a LR 3.9V8. All of these changes have been updated with DVLA and the registration certificate reflects these changes correctly. I would be grateful for any thoughts and advice.

First post , Hi . Help !! I have built a Darrian rally car , I built it with a Hispec electronic handbrake , the spot caliper kit , sold as IVA legal , all works fine , passed the IVA the way the brake holds , but it failed as it must be able to switch on with the ignition off , but you cannot release the handbrake unless the ignition is on , reading through the instructions it can be set up with an ignition interlock , or a brake interlock , or both , but it doesn't explain how to do this , and chasing Hispec for 6 months has got me no where , the last time I did get to speak to Geoff , he said he would need to refresh is mind , was working on a kit then and wo…

Hello About 3 years ago I welded a chassis based on the Locost plans with the intention of building a kit car from scratch. I also purchased some donor parts. I would like to complete this project and make road legal. Is this still possible with parts from different donor cars? Or do I need to buy new parts? Is it possible to build a kit car and register without using a kit car manufacturer parts? Thank you in advance Tim

Can anyone let me know the required IVA specification for catalytic converters, and what the inspector will ask to see as proof if the cat is inside a silencer? i am building a car with a hayabusa engine in the back and need a short silencer with the cat inside. Does the cat have to have type approval and does it need to be euro 5 or 6, i had a chat with Westfield cars and they said they have a cat in silencer that would do the job but unfortunately its to long, when asked if it has type approval they came back with it does not need to be, so any information would be much appreciated as i am stuck at the moment .

Looking at getting ready to install the underside floor pan? I'm thinking of welding in thicker pans, maybe 3mm steel. Would this affect anything going forward with the IVA? Or is riveting the best option and why ? Thanks In advance

Hi I have put a deposit on a RH2B, it was built as a track car and I want to strip it and rebuild it for the road. I’m paying £700 without engine or gearbox but the IVA issue is giving me second thoughts. Comes with a new body kit. What are your thoughts please?

Hi - I have a Q registered kit car that has been off the road for 30 years. The log book is correct and states - Robin Hood as the manufacturer. I'm looking at getting it back on the road - do I need to put it through an IVA or SVA or is it ok as is and just need to get it MOT prepped? Follow up question - the engine has been swapped out since the Q plate was issued, it states 1600cc and its an 1800cc fitted. Do I need to swap back to a 1600 or can I update the log book with the new engine....and final one, if it needs to be swapped back (MX5 engine) to the 1600 does it matter that the enine number has changed. Apologies for the flurry of questions. Thanks in advance.

Kit is coming up to it's first MOT in June, anyone know if you can present 30 days early & maintain the anniversary date like you can with a normal MOT?

I see that the IVA manual section 28 states "The rear fog lamp(s) must only illuminate when dipped beam, main beam or front fog lamps are lit". However, the MOT inspection manual section 4.5 states "Front and rear fog lamps are permitted to operate independently of any other lamps or ignition systems" and "Rear fog lamps may extinguish when main-beam is switched on or when dipped beam headlamps are switched off". This says to me that the IVA and MOT rules are different! The fog lamp can be independent of any other lamp for MOT. I'm asking because I got an advisory on the fog lamp when I passed the IVA, as it could turn on any time I pressed the button. My fi…

So... Took my S7 over to Kidderminster this morning. 50 mile drive in an unproven car at 6am;started out stressful but once I got half way I realosed there wasn't much point worrying as anything that could go wrong would have done by then! It drove absolutely flawlessly and I loved it. Arrived before the station opened and had a chat with Paul who was to be my tester; there was another chap present (whose name I can't remember) who is the IVA quality inspector and was checking that the tests were being carried out to the correct level- this worried me a bit. They had a look around the car, poking things and asking me about various parts of the car. Started with the speedo…

The seat belts are traditional 3 point retractable and secured to one existing chassis point and 3 points on a seat belt frame. With Lomax long our of manufacturing how do I get a declaration of suitability as required on the deceleration. Anyone any similar experience? TIA

Hi sorry if this has been asked before , couldn't find info in search. Having bought my S3a last month I've got it ready for a MOT, it was 1st registered in June 1999 and so I'm wondering how the emissions work as the engine came from a 1987 Sierra. as I believe that as its post 1998 registration it will have to meet emissions at the time of the IVA? so I've been through the paperwork I have and found a receipt for the doner Sierra with registration number and this photocopy pic attached. is this the IVA cert? Do I need to prove age of the engine for MOT Emissions? Cheers Graham

Dear all, I am fitting my steering column to my 2B. The lower bracket seems fine, but the other one at the wheel end seems to thin? it is pinched together with bolts? Is this right for the IVA? I am thinking to make a new bracket from thicker steel? Has anyone else come across this problem? Many Thanks Neil

  25. Hi all. I have recently had a fail on the IVA turning circle self-correction with my GBS Zero. At the low speed turn, taking my hands off the wheel has no change at all in the turning circle. It simply stays on track with the same turning radius. Any ideas on what I could do with the front geometry to try and initiate self- correct? I have over-inflated front tires. Steering rack is a new Mk2 escort unit and seems free with the front wheels in the air so I don't think there is any binding. Question would be, in general, which element of the front geometry has the greater affect on this self-centering? P.S. It does have an LSD too. Thanks in advance …
