Wanted - Hydraulic Engine Hoist

Guest Guy

I want to buy a hydraulic engine hoist like the one in the picture below because I always seem to be needing one. If anyone has a S/H one that they no longer need and want to sell it let me know.

Its well worth getting yourself one, ours cost £139 from our local tool shop. Only problem you will find is there is suddenly lots of people you know who want to borrow the thing to save them shelling out any cash :gdit: :gdit: :gdit:

Just say No

Don't buy one, build one out of old scrap!

We built one before stripping the doner. Long hydrolic rams are expensive so we used a 1 meter long M12 threaded rod with a nut welded on to pull the other end of the lifting arm down rather than pushing the arm up on the same side of the pivot. Plus its a good opertunity for some welding practise.

I agree about not lending your hoist out though. Some of my neighbours borrowed it to take out an engine and returned it all twisted up and broken. It didn;t take too long to fix. I should have known not to lend it to them when I saw they were taking the engine out of an escort...

We bought ours off ebay for £75. I think due to the colour that it is ex millitary. It is a hydraulic and very sturdy and can be packed flat.

Has served our purpose well, and doesn't pose a storage problem as it seems to be constantly out earning beer tokens.

In Machine mart they are around £150 so I priced up the steel to build one using a bottle jack as the ram, came to about £60 so if no one's selling then I'll be building :D

The Granada V6 with gearbox is kind of heavy

You could try a second hand invalid bath hoist. They are cheap and easy to convert as an engine lift. I do have a spare hydraulic ram if you want to make your own lift. Colin

Thanks for all the help, I've now made an engine hoist. I found a bench at work that was made out of good heavy steel so I used it. The lifting mechanism is from a sizzer jack. The engine weighs around 300kG and I can lift it up by 1M and wheel it about.
