Surly the inserts are just the same as fitted to alley heads and as Nigel says are cut after fitting so I can’t see the reason for having to be so careful with them.

perhaps if you use too coarse a grinding paste, you could induce deep scratches which you would not be able to remove with the finer grades of pastes

 

or

 

you'ld be grinding away for so long that you'ld wear the valve excessively?

Hi guys,.

It isnt so much that you can't or shouldn't grind hardened seats,. they do in fact lap in exactly the same as normal seats,. My understanding is, its just not common practice.

The tools by the way, used for cutting the seats are of course much harder than the seats themselves.
