Bottom Crank Pulley

Any tips on how to get a bottom crank pulley off if it wont budge?

I am rebuilding a 2.0 EFi kindly supplied by Iain- when trying to take the bottom pulley off it wouldnt budge at all, so with the aid of a large hammer, a puller lots of heat - it still would budge.

As the red mist decended i just kept tightening the puller unitl it went bang- and snapped half of the pulley off!! :(

Now this little bugger is a twin belted pulley- and looking at mr haines' manual it looks like a "pressed" type pulley with a rubber seal thing half way from the centre out.

All the other pulleys i have and have taken off are single type belt, and this is what i will be using so im not too fussed about butchering it a bit more

Has anyone encountered similar problems- or is there a secret way of removing these without destroyinh it completely?

Any ideas very welcome

Cheers

I cant remember how I got my crnk pulley off, I did do a 3/4 strip down of the engine, might be best if you remove the lower alloy casting that surrounds the bottom end pulley. then you could probably get at it with a puller, or chisel.

if that doesnt work, heat the pulley up till its slightly glowing <red, and go again at it with a chisel..

hope u can get it off't

You need a gear puller, aka http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/pro.js...=14493&ts=47617 the claws go around the pully, then you use a wrench or whatever to wind the middle onto the top of the nut head (make sure it's loose so that the pulley can move forward). It's a low process, but get's there.

Ahh that did the trick!!

Cheers chaps- dunno why i wasnt having much luck with the puller though, perhaps the three prong version help distribute the force more uniformally.
