Mountney Steering Wheel

Hi,

I'm wondering if a previous owner of my Super Spec kit modified the Mountney Steering wheel mounting. It has been machined out from the rear so it seems to fit the steering boss (?) better but there is no space that I can see for the column switches.

Here is a pic

Does this look normal? It has been machined out (slightly off-centre) with a cone shape from the side nearest to the steering column. With it like it is there seems to be no space for the column switch but without the machining it looks like there could just be enough space.

This is the problem of buying a part build kit - you don't know what the previous owner has done...

Thanks for any info.

John.

It looks to me as if it has been bodged to fit a different column as there doesn’t look like there is any splines left and therefore if fitted to the ford column the only thing to stop it slipping round would be the tension on the nut. Not a good idea IMHO. My advice would be to bin it and buy a new one.

The SuperSpec has a Ford Focus column, and as such has a hexagonal shaped end. As I recall there wasn't much in the way of splines as the boss relies on the hexagonal shape of the column to stop the boss from just spinning round.

That said I have no idea why someone would have to have machined out some material, unless the boss isn't one for a Focus and it's been 'adapted' to fit?!?

Chris,

There is about 1/3 of an inch of hexagon shaped hole left. The end of the steering column is approx 1/2 inch hexagon that becomes a cone shape and ends up as approx 1 inch circular shaft. The machining makes the mounting fit over this such that the hexagon end of the steering column almost comes right through the mounting. It 'looks' OK and it was only that I couldn't see how the column switches would fit that made me question whether it was correct.

Is the column switch also from a Focus? If so why do we have to cut bits out to make it fit?

Regardless whether it's the correct boss or not I would still bin it and get a new one. If it was the correct one then why was it altered? Also it sounds as if too much has been taken off allowing it too far on so as to foul the switches.

No the switches that come with the kit are from some form of Rover / MG based car, hence the having to cut bits out to get it to fit the column. I binned it and got some proper focus switches from the local scrappy. IMHO it looks a million times better.

They do look better, I might change mine. The Rover switches on my car don'tlook bad and work well but fitting them was a pain!

The cowling for the focus looks nicer too!
