Gearbox Oil

Hi,

 

I am sure I read somewhere that it was Ok to use Automatic Transmission Fluid in the gearbox instaed of the thick Hypoid Gear Oil. The idea was that it would make the gear change less notchy (especially when cold). Has anyone tried this ?

A few of the performance car manufacturers recommend ATF instead of gear oil - TVR definatlely do...

But, I have also heard and read a few negative reports regarding using it from other sources.

If ATF was better for the box than EP80/90 then....Mr Ford would recommend it wouldn't he?

Too true - the engine has just given up the ghost at 20-odd thousand miles - £4500+VAT to replace...

So much for buying British....
