Hi all,

I have been looking for a cheap way into motorsport for a while and I am currently looking into starting Autograss racing.

Do any of you out there have a previous experience or advise that you could give me???

There are a lot on ebay for sale at the moment, especially as it is coming up to the end of the season.

Thanks for your help,

Guy

A few of my mates gave it a go with an escort. They gave it up after one season as it cost them a fortune for very little motor sport.

They now have a Seven which they plan to use for track days.

I tried a season of Kart racing and yet again it was a case of those with the biggest budget stood the best chance of winning a competition i.e. I had one machine, ..... the others had a transit full!

I'd do track days and sprints...like the one RHOCaR do at Barkestone.

Good Luck.

I used to do it years ago when you could get away and win with a standard GT engine by the time I quit 10 years later they coming out with BDA's and fully tuned Hotrod Kent motors, not sure what its like now but then if you fitted a pancake filter and wheel spacers you were put into the specials class against V8 single seater's.

Got a mate whse son does Autograss, entry fees are peanuts and amount of racing you get depends on your position in the heats. The higher you finish the further you progress.

Obviously you need a car and it has to be traillered to events but there are about 9 classes with the lower ones based on standard engines so they can be built from MOT failures. Normally 2 day events with agreat social scene with bar and dance on the saturday night if you want that kind of thing.

Thanks for your replies so far.

I was planning on starting in class 1 or perhaps 2 and then go from there.

Daft question, but do you think an 06 1.2ltr Fiesta would pull a trailer & mini/nova ok? ;)

Thanks again

Guy

Sorry!! it MAY be able to pull your trailer & car but legally I don't think it's anywhere heavy enough-- should be a note on Fiesta's chassis plate giving max. train weight -- that is car + trailer + load; somebody with much greater knowledge will prob. be along in a moment.

Yes, I was not sure.

What do you think the weight of a stripped out mini would be?

I should be able to find the weight of a trailer from a manufacture.

Thanks for your help,

Guy

Stock morris minor is about 800kg so mini should be slightly less, so stripped out should be less than 700. Could be towed on Aluminium trailer without brakes probably but better with brakes & better on a heavier car.

First you need a braked trailer there is no way you can get the gross weight down to legal limit by the time you have got the race car plus spare wheels etc on it. Also don’t stint on the tow car the bigger the better. There is nothing more likely to give you brown trousers than getting a snake on and having a car that is only marginally heavier than the load being towed especially if the nose weight is not correct (which from my experience with car trailers is not always easy to achieve). Also 4 wheeled close coupled trailers are much more forgiving on load positioning and pull much straighter.

I agree with Chris, not recommended but theoretically it's possible... I have a picture of a guy picking up the back end of a fully road legal stripped out mini like a wheelbarrow.

A fully Aluminium single axle trailer for a mini could easily be under 100kg.
