Hi,I have a problem with my 1999 Ford Focus tdi.The other day it stalled when i tried to move it and now wont start.I had some one look at it who said it was the crankshaft sensor,so he changed it but its still the same.I then called Mr RAC out who could not find the problem and towed me to the local Ford dealer to put it on there expensive puter. They have told me it came up with an FIP fault but havent told me the exact problem. Is it the fuel pump do you think can they be repaired or is it a new one.(gulp!)

Any ideas!!!

Thanks in advance.

A commom problem on the TDI engine is a sticking EGR valve on the exhaust. I had a C Max up until recently and never had a problem but a workmate has had his cleaned/changed 6 times so far. Opinions on various forums i went on suggested it was down to short journeys or using poor diesel. A mechanic on one forum said to tap it with a light hammer to free it off. I never had to do this so don't know if it works.

FIP fault is the fuel injection pump. main dealer is about £700 parts (YES £700) with £300 labour. most ppl get a second hand pump from scrappy for £100 and fit it themselves. never done it so not sure how easy but might be worth that route along with a haynes manuel. you might lose a couple of quid if its doesnt work but you might save nearly £900 if it does. Could be well off the mark but its what a phone call and five mins of looking round the web have given me(apears to be a fairly commen fault. good luck either way. if you are looking for a new one ask on here to see if anyone can get you a trade price pump then take it to your local mechanic if you dont feel like fitting it. I bought a set of calipers for the hood the other day and Ford Stealers wanted £250 and fianlly got em from a motor factors for £54. always worth nosing into a motor factors for parts.

Good luck

Gimme a shout if you want me to have a look for trade prices tomorrow.

Cheers guys my fear was the pump.Im going to drag it out the main dealers tomoz and source a pump cant afford for them to do it.Whilst i was there there was a guy who had taken a Ford in with a headlight out,he waited an hour and when the bill came in £83.50+vat all they had done is changed the fuse but claimed it took a while to find the problem because they dont check the bulb or fuse first!!!! He wasnt a very happy man but i left before there was blood shed so dont know how it panned out.Shocker.

Cheers anyway guys i will let you know how i get on.

cool no worries.

P.S. took the van into VW to change the brake light bulb and they wanted £60. told em they could keep it and ill go accross the road to crysler for company car. they fixed it for free. my brother and his work changed it the first time and it was not easy to figure out how to do it but and easy job when you know how. God damn car makers dont make em like they used to.

I took my Passat into a local dealer becuase the engine management warning light came on. The told me it was the brake switch and charged me about £150. One day later the engine management light came back on again - turns out one of the brake light bulbs was loose.

if you go down the second hand pump route... make sure its not a coded pump like most tdi's otherwise you will still be paying the dealer for a recode or at least a diesel specialist who has the equipment

Andy,

If you ring your local Halfrauds and get a trade price, then i'll pop over and collect with you (i've got a trade card), if you are happy with the price from them of course, to ensure you get the discount. Would have to be a cash sale though.

Let me know, happy to help. I'm in Ramsgate, so it's only about 40mins or so.

Cheers

Al

Thanks guys for your help.I picked the car up today and Mr Ford was not much help.I'm no closer to finding out the problem.I have some one coming out tomoz because I'm now told that theres no power getting to the pump.He said there is a relay somewhere that does the fuel pump and the imoblizer.

When i got to the dealer the man that had the fuse blown was back there,it had blown again, couldn't believe it his not a happy man.But then im not to chuffed either.

Thanks Al if it comes to that i may well give you a shout thats very helpfull.

Cheers Andy
