New To The Site

Recommended Posts

Hi, 1st i would like to say hello as im new to the site. I have also pm'd this to another member for info,

I have today bought a completed (E reg sappire) 2001 b2 with a 2.0 pinto and 5 speed type 9 box, i know absoutely nothing about Fords, I am a huge fan of Vaux. Basically, i have 2no. xe engines, one from a 89 gte valve and another from a K reg Cav SRI valve (dis-less). I would like to use the Cav engine.

1. Am i right in thinking that the adapter bolts to the origonal type 9?

2. What clutch pressure plate did you use? Was the spline long enough?

3. You also mentioned that the box now has to be moved forward? what was involved?

Any thoughts? Best wishes Gareth

Hi Gareth,

I have an XE in my Hood.

I had to buy a custom bellhousing, Rally Design or A Frame engineering sell them.

A custom sump, ignition system, I use an 8V Astra dizzy & coil.

A custom inlet manifold & twin 45 Dellortos, but bike carbs seem to be the way to go.

I use the standard GTE clutch cover plate, but the driven plate I think comes from a Diesel Transit. My local factor spent an hour going through his catalogues to get one the right diameter with a centre to fit the type 9 spline.

I had to remove the water pipe at the back of the head & block it off with an inset plug.

Home made engine mount arms, Land Rover rubber mounts, floor mounted brake pedal, reversed standard exhaust manifold.

There is a write up on fitting an XE on the NW RHOCAR site HERE into a series 3, so a 2B is slightly different, but a few of us have done it & been very pleased with the result.

Bob

PS put your location so anyone local may help.

thanks for the replies, im from Liverpool, can i ask about the bell housing, does it just bolt onto the type 9 bell housing or is it a box out job? I heard that the box has to be moved forward, is that true?

Ive read the write up some good infor there. I will be ok with mounts i think, Is it possible to use the origional intake system?

It's a whole new bell housing.... you might be able to remove & refit whilst still under the car with the engine out but probably not.

You can actually pull the engine out with box still fitted & insert new engine the same way as far as I know....

I have a Mk 1 escort which did have a XE running standard Vauxhall fuel injection. The standard system is quite wide and tall so will not fit below your bonnet, but is possible.

If you can find one, a Manta sump and gearbox are also an option.

thanks for the replies, i have mangaged to source most of the part i need from SBD motorsport, works out at just over 550+vat for the kit.(including sump, clutch, bearings, adapter) does that seem right.

Where can i get engine mounts from?

I am a little concearned by having to move the box forward. Need to figure out what to do for induction too. would like to keep it standard if pos to save pennies for the future.

Spigot bearing is this the trust bearing? sorry to be a complete noob

the gearbox doesn't need moving forward, you'll need a new bellhousing and clutch arm (rs2000), use the pressure plate from one of your engines, either a tranny diesel friction plate or one from SBD/QED/Westfield, ford release bearing, the spigot bearing is a small bearing that goes inside the end of the xe crank to accept the type 9 input shaft.

You'll need to modify the drivers footwell as well as removing a lug off the bellhousing on that side to get the engine to fit straight, new or modified pedals and brake set up.

Engine mounts will have to be custom made, not hard, and peugeot 306 rear subframe mounts are good for the rubbers.

Exhaust manifold can be done by cutting and shutting the original as per the instructions in the NW link, bit tricky but not too bad.

I've seen a westy with the original intake system, so it can be done but you'll probably need to re-route the steering column to another bearing and UJ fixed to the side chassis rail and maybe fit a bulge to the bonnet.

the plough tube need altering to fit around the oil fliter and the cooler needs to go too.

have a look here

Try Yukspeed, he should be a bit cheaper.

The spigot bearing sits in the flywheel end of the crank and supports the gearbox input shaft.

Thanks for the input steve/paul.

Steve, what is the plough tube? is it hard to re-route im pretty handy with a mig so im sure i can nope. What is the issue with the drivers footwell?

as per the pedal box what is involved? I can fabricate some parts to an extent but would prefer to buy off shelf if pos, i notice the xe exhaust manifold is N/S but the outllet is O/S where did you cross it over?

i will ring yupspeed for prices too where did you get your bits n bobs?

Once again thanks so much for all the info. very very appreciated

Please use the reply button and not the quote button,

If you are a real hoody anything is possible.

The FIAT PUNTO "electric steering colunm" is a possibility, small and precise bit of kit even with the ECU, usually available on fleabay.
