Type 9 Bellhousing

Hi all,

I am doing my prep prior to getting my Zero in a couple of weeks.

I am mating a Zetec to a type 9 and Richard mentioned that I need to chop the starter part of the casting and fit a plate to get the whole lot sitting cack in the chassis better.

Has anyone got any photos/measurements of what/where I cut?

Many thanks

Sharky

That would be sitting Back not Cack!! Lol!

I'd be interested in that too as I am also going down the Zetec/type 9 route.

Hi Sharky,

The starter motor housing don't do much! if you bolt starter to bellhousing

you will see how far it goes in.

If you measure about 50mm down from the rear of the starter housing

and bring a line towards the bellhousing bolt holes, you should end

up with a L share with the leg of the L about 45 degrees.

I can email pictures if you need them or I think Tony b blogsite

has them on.

Hope this helps

John

P.S. you need to make a cover plate for the hole

I bonded mine on

Here we go guys i may be able to assist here.

these were taken before, during and after but there was still some tidying up to do.

One thing i would say is do it before the engine is in situ. was a nightmare when all bolted in.

hope this helps

Tony,

Thanks, but I cannot see any pics showing where you have altered the Zetec/Type 9 bellhousing/Starter area.

All, please excuse my ignorance whilst I wait to pick up my kit (in June) but once you replace the "cut off" casting with a starter, will you not have the same or similar clearance problems? Or is the starter mounted elsewhere on the Zetec? Is it just a blanking plate that is fixed to the altered housing?

As I am going the 2B route, will I have the same problems clearing the chassis?

Its the rear of the starter housing that hits the chassis when you try to line the engine up, theres also some pictures on Mike's blogsite MAC801123

The starter still bolts in on the original bolts - dont cut anymore off !, and then just cover the hole with a blanking plate

I dont think you have this problem with the 2B, only the Zero - which one are you getting?

Sorry - just read Joe's post, you wont need to do what Joe has done if you get the shortenned sump from Scholar engines as it's already shaped for the starter, if you use the original sump then yes you need to cut this down too.

In all cases (with the Zero) you'll need to cut the bellhousing down as per my pictures!

Joe - how high off the ground is that sump? :o

Thanks Tony

I understand the need to stick it in the chassis first, so I will have to wait a week or two!

yea tony ground clearance with the original sump is a seriouse issue. er with 1 medium sized family member and not even fully finished 3inches :nea:

so i think im definatly gona be taking a trip to scholar engines or maybe raceline. will also be putting on near 400lb springs on the front thanks to AL for the tip.

After talking with Richard on Friday afternoon, it appears that I might have a van full of bits in my garage by this weekend - yikes! Scary but sstrangely exciting too! :yahoo:

PS I am in Billingshurst (with all its bright lights and lurid attractions!)

Ahh, I see!

All starts to become clear...........

I am awaiting delivery(pick up) of a 2B so hopefully I won't have to do this.
