Sorry Bently, missed your original reply!

As Steve says, the lighter will work which ever way the socket is wired, it is not polarity sensitive. Your TomTom however, almost certainly is polarity sensitive!

I would check out your socket wiring, to be sure.............

Thanks all will try testing the wires in the daylight tomorrow, duncethat I am didn't know it would matter !!!

Don't take your radar detector camping if you go to France , the plods will nick you

I can vouch for that.

Some time ago I was on holiday in the South of France and driving up the autoroute near Perpignan, was pulled by a couple of Gendarmes in a beat up old Peugeot 504. They had somehow spotted a radar detector on the dash of my car, sitting at the base of the windscreen. Result was radar detector confiscated and an instant (cash only) 5000 franc fine (equivalent at the time to almost £500!). If unable to pay the car would be confiscated.

i didn't have enough cash but offered credit cards, so they escorted me to a Petrol station where I had to make a card transaction and the Gendarmes walked away with the cash from the till!

Lesson very bitterly learnt!
