Audi must be really out to ensure victory in this years 24. Apparently one of the main things they've been investigating is how to speed up their pit stops , with the limited number of mechanics allowed to work on the car in the pit lane. After all every second in the pits is a second they are losing by not being out on the track.

Their first idea to speed up wheel changes was, apparently, to design some special shoes for the mechanics, the shoes having carbon fibre sprung blades in them to enable the mechanic to stand and turn to get to the next wheel quicker.

Although promising the approach was not conclusive as there was only fraction of a second difference, if that.

"H" (Chief engineer on the McNish car and one of the sports inovators) then had the idea of trying the same thing but using female mechanics as they are generally smaller than their male counterparts and don't have so far to jump up and down between wheels. Using the same type of sprung shoes etc it was more promising but again too little to prove conclusive.

But his next idea proved an absolute blinder when he tried the same technique , with the sprung shoes etc but this time using midgets as mechanics. They don't have to bend or stand up between wheels!

It is said to be 2 to 3 seconds a pit stop quicker!

In fact Audi are so pleased with the technique that they are now trying to patent it to stop Peugeot or anyone else from using it.
