What Donor

Hi

A friend of mine is looking at building a zero  and as a result we have some questions.

Is any particular sierra required for the donor? Year?

It is preferable to fit a newer engine in the zero, probably a zetec, either new or used

Can an age related plate be obtained if all the donor parts from the sierra are used and a zetec fitted?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Mike

Hi, Mike.

I'll have a go at some of it.

No particular bodystyle, so hatch, saloon or estate will do, but not XR4 or Cosworth.

Any engine size is OK, but I suggest you don't use the engine anyway & go for either a used 2.0 Zetec blacktop from (eg) an old Mondeo, or the same, new, from GBS.

Any year Sierra will do, but obviously the later the better.

What you'll need as a minimum are the diff, rear driveshafts & hubs, front uprights (aka front hubs), gearbox, upper steering column plus shrouds and stalks. If you don't want the hassle of removing all this lot, cleaning it & refurbing it, GBS can supply a complete package of donor parts. Or you can just get some bits from GBS & source the rest yourself.

Most common diff ratios are 3.92 and 3.62. Either will do. Metal tag on the back of the diff tells you what the ratio is.

Gearbox will be either type 9 or MT75. Again either will do. Type 9 is narrower than MT75 & has a separate bellhousing. MT75 has an integral bellhousing, will handle more power, & is lighter. Gear ratios are the same except for 1st, which is lower on the MT75. Either will bolt straight up to a Zetec blacktop.

How much else you source from the donor is up to you. Personally, I went for just the diff, gearbox, driveshafts & hubs. Couldn't be bothered removing the rest. I got a few other used bits from adverts & ebay, but the rest I got new either from GBS or again from ebay.

I suggest not to go for any used braking components. Get everything new & fit discs all round.

Let me know if you need any further info on things like cooling, fuelling, electrics etc & I'll do what I can. But remember, I'm no expert either!

What plate you get will depend on your component mix & their source(s). Best to read the IVA manual.
