Collapsable Steering Boss

HELP!!!!!!! I failed my iva because my boss was not collapsable. The tester told me to either put the original sierra wheel back on or buy a collapsable boss. He also said you can get them anywhere. Well a helpful RHOCAR member helped me out by letting me borrow his original sierra wheel. Only problem is I can't fit between the seat and the wheel. So back to the original thought of collapsable steering boss. Iv phoned all over the place. Aparently callspsable boss' are not made or surplied anymore.

So what do I do. Can't find boss and can't fit with original wheel. (aparently momo do a collapsable boss, £50, roughly same price but steering wheels start at roughly £70) is this my only option

thanks

Hi Luke,

Firstly, sorry to hear about this. Things must've tightened up with regards to the regs? :unknw:

When I went for SVA I had a Mountney wheel fitted - Not the one supplied in the kit, a slightly larger one that I boutght at a Show. It was a Mountney, but unfortunately not the same fitting as the kit supplied one :fool: . I did a trawl on eBay and found a boss that would fit and it just happened to be collapsible. Anyway, search on eBay and you may well find something that won't set you back so much dosh.

The sierra wheel does not collapse, the collapsable part of the column is the concertina section between the wheel and the mounting.

Just another example of the testers knowing very little!

I had the same issue, so for the retest I swapped the wheel for the sierra one two streets away from the test centre, squeezed in, got the pass and swapped back for the journey home

Perhaps a little missunderstanding here? did they mean a padded centre on the steering wheel ? I seem to remember some of these being passed around in the club some time ago!,may be I was dreaming  :sorry: mower man [mick]

The wheel was padded. The rack is collapsable at the front for frontal impact. But the boss was not collapsable. Either sierra wheel needed or collapsable boss. I couldn't fit in the car with the sierra wheel. Couldn't move legs. So iv ordered the collapsable boss. I phoned GBS today and asked them before I bought the boss kit. They said a pad would do but i had a pad on. So I ended up just buyig a boss.

Cheers

Hi,

Could someone post a picture of a collapsable steering boss?

I have nearly finished the build of a 2004 Superspec (bought 2007). That has an Escort column (I think) which appears collapsable directly behind the steering wheel and has an offset shaft with a u/j behind that. I'm planning to use the 11in Mountney wheel that came with kit (with an added padded centre). Is this now a fail?

While I'm posting - is there anyone within a reasonable distance of Herne Bay in Kent who has passed IVA and could come over to give me advice on final preparation and submission for IVA?

Thanks for any info,

John (jwts).

pm me your email addres and il send you at picture of the collaspable boss. I had my steering wheel covered for the iva buy the guy didn't accept this cos the boss wasn't collapsable(the iva tester was in for holiday cover so it may have been him making things up) with the boss that I got it did not fit the traditional mountney steering wheel. If I wanted that to fit iuss to buy a bracket(nearly same price as boss kit) or for pennies you could make you own. I got the boss from a website called motorspeed, I phoned them to make sure I was getting the right Thing as other companys said they don't make a collapsable boss anymore. I ended up just buying the boss and a new wheel that looked better than the traditional mountney
