Gearbox Reconditioning

Hi All,

I have a rather tired 5 speed gearbox in my Hood that (for one example) tends to crunch if you are a bit quick changing between 1st and 2nd gear. I have been ringing around for a recon replacement but most companies do not carry this box as it is now quite old. I found that Vulcan Engineering in West London will do this to my box but they want £400+ to do it!

Like most of you I am always running to a rather tight budget so I have two choices:-

1. To find a reconditioning company who are not going to charge like a wounded rhino or

2. Do the work myself. Gearboxes are the one thing I have never fiddled with, I have a Haynes manual and lots of enthusiasm but is this a big (difficult) job that will involve the purchase of many specialist tools?

Any advice will be very much appreciated.

Cheers,

Boggie.

Hi Dave,

If you are not too far away then maybe we could 'do it together' and pool specialist tools etc. At least this way we can work on one at a time so if something goes "ping" and bits fall out we can look at the other one to see how it goes back together! Whereabouts are you?

I would still rather get someone else to do it but I cant afford £400+.

Cheers,

Boggie.

Boogie

I don't have a gearbox to strip yet, but the main problem is where to get the spare parts like bearings/oil seals/gears and syncros...the actual strip is easy enough... B)

Guest Great Scott!!

ahh

Gearboxes thats my thing :)

ive been reconditioning them for 15 years so any info ring me daytime on Nottingham 0115 9821 942 and ask for scott

Boggie u say your box crunches upto 2nd, so i take it thats the only fault? or is it noisey aswell? also what oil u running in it? we dont recon many type 9's anymore but when we did we always used auto transmission fluid never hypoid it was just to thick and made them crunch especially when cold.

with regard to parts i'm pretty sure i can get everything for them still and if i was going to fully recon one i think i could keep the cost down to £200

any questions just ask :)

GREAT SCOTT! You are a star! I may well be up for a rebuild if you are not teasing!

Yes I 'think' the only problem with mine is the 1st - 2nd change but I also suspect a worn bearing but who can tell over the noise of twin 45s and a sports exhaust! I did use hypoid and it does get better once warm but the problem is still there even then. You don't do exchange by any chance do you? The thought of being without the Hood during these very few spring/summer days is not good.

Will give you a ring in the next couple of days (as I suspect Dave might too) to chat.

Cheers for now,

Boggie
