What about a cat's whisker crystal radio? :crazy:

No drain on the battery, but might have a job keeping on station when moving, or even idling! :rofl:

And I bet most on here are too young to have even seen or heard of one. :blush:

I had one my grandfather gave me; got chucked away when I got bored with it; wish I'd kept it! :cray:

 

when I was about 13 I had an "electronics" kit in which one of the projects was a cat's whisker radio but without the whisker and crystal I think a variable capacitor was used instead no valves in the kit but I remember a board with lots of springs on it that was used to connect the components together

That sounds like a Philips electronic engineer kits

 

Had them myself.

googled for images of them and yes that was it, must have been a EE5 or EE8 as I don't remember having a speaker just the earpiece
