Zero Fitting Zetec

Hi all this is my first post so please bare with me if these topics have been answered already.

Im fitting a 2lt Zetec to a zero, my questions are:

1. In the zero will the sump need to be shortened?

2. Running a type 9 gear box with the extended pin in the release arm and spigot bearing and webbing cut away from sump what starter motor is best to be used on standard 2.0 flywheel and clutch

3. Can standard alternator be used?

Many thanks :)

P.S engine is a black top from a focus 1999

Hi,

In answer to 1) Yes, it is recommended to shorten the sump otherwise there is only about 2 or 3 inches ground clearance.

2) I fitted an mt75 gearbox but the starter motor should be the same. I used the one that GBS sell which fits.

3) Again, I used the mini sized alternator from GBS with mounting kit so don't know the answer to this one. If you already have the alternator, I'd try it out for size first.

hey

1. as above, shorten it or get a raceline sump, otherwise ground cleareance is a real issue

2. I fitted an MT75 gearbox, i believe with the ype 9 you need to cut the webbing away, the starter motor is the standard focus motor

3. I couldn't get the standard alternator to fit, in the end I've fitted a small Denso alternator (at the end of the day you're not powering anything of note so a small one is fine)

one thing. the engine is from a focus which has a shorter sump standard as opposed to the engines out of mondeos etc.. does it still require shortening? its not far off level with the bottom of the gearbox mounting plate on engine as it is

Re point 2, if memory serves a 2.0l zetec with type 9 box you will need a 1.8 escort flywheel? I then used a standard sierra starter motor. I believe the standard 1.8 flywheel also has the trigger wheel already machined into it.

I bought a shortened sump for mine. Def well worth the investment, but can be quite pricy so shop around. GBS can also supply a nice compact alternator and bracket to save space.

The 2 litre flywheel works. You need a LRS707 starter motor( Would confirm when i get to car tonight). With the alternator. its a denso deriviative. I think they came off the diahatsu. If on a bargain hunt, check ebay you would find one. The bracket is fairly easy to make. But as everybody said if you cant find a way call GBS.

Also I sourced my starter motor from lucas electrical, they have a store close to my work. Reconed unit was about £50. Regarding the sump Just use the old one. Chop and find a local fab place to weld back up for you.

yes i have heard about the 1.8 fly wheels etc but i also told from gbs that the 2.0 is fine using there starter. im awaiting the collection date for the kit i have bought but i already have the zetec and box etc so when the car arrives i will drop the engine in and assess it from there. the sum doesn't seem to sit any lower than then gear box bell housing as it is now so will get some better ideas when its in the chassis. the other thing i was tempted by is to fit a sum sheild under the car but again when have the car and can physically see the clearance etc i will decided from there

Hi,

As I recall when fitting the raceline sump (Yes I know it's pricey :( ) you will find that you can chop off about an inch or just over from the bottom of the gearbox and then there is very little left showing beneath the car.

As you can see from this picture. The bit that has been chopped off is on the floor.

You can see the whole build from day one here:

Oh, and the flywheel is the stock one that came with the engine. 2.0 ltr Zetec

Hope that helps,

Simon.

I fitted the Raceline to my zetec with a MT75 box, Raceline & box are near enough flush to each other and give a clearance of about 120mm from the floor.

That seems strange as I have the same combination zetec, mt75 and raceline sump.

Yet the mt75 was over an inch lower than the sump which is why I cut that part away.

The sump is more or less level with the bottom rail of the chassis and the first thing that would have caught

any road bumps would have been the front edge of the gearbox. I didn't want THAT hitting anything

as it might have ripped the engine apart - not good :)

hmm, that is strange, I couldnt understand why you cut a bit off!!

I will have another look tonight and see if I can take a picture, hope I have it installed right.

There was around 1 1/2 inches difference if I recall.

(I can't be exact tonight as it would mean moving all the cars to get into the garage and hunt around for the bit I chopped off.

I'll try and remember tomorrow and get a picture of the bit.
