don't know the box, but as its FWD transverse type so will make an educated guess.

 

shims are genrally use to adjust the diff backlash and diff bearing preload. therefore shim is decided by each diff/pinion setup.

 

more used to the VW/Audi FWD boxes and they need special tools to determin shimming required.

 

to much preload you stress the bearings, to little you get play when the box warms up, to much backlash the box is noisey and pinion/crown wheel wear is increased, to little and the same happens. its a delicate balance
