Greengauges Speedo Sender

I'm busy fitting new Caerbont gauges to my 2b.

All works well with the exception of the electronic speedo.

I asked for, & received the gearbox type sender unit from Greengauges.

I can't find their wiring instruction on the web as they claim and I am waiting

patiently for a reply from them.

Has anyone in the community fitted this combination from Greengauges ?

If so I'd be gratefull for the wiring connection info.

There are only 2 wires on the sender 1 Green & 1 Blue & Red.

It's known as the Quenched Oscilator speed sensor apparently!

Thanks

Colin

Greengauges site has this:

A hall effect sensor, these are used in vehicles where the gearbox has the provision for a mechanical speedo cable take off, The hall effect sensor fixes into the speedo take off point and counts the revolutions of what would have been the cable drive.

Which sounds like what you've got, so I would imagine the following would apply;

The electrical connections to the sensor should be made as follows:-

One wire should be connected to a switched positive supply, i.e. power should be off to the sensor when the ignition is off.

The second wire should be connected to the black and white wire on the harness supplied with the speedometer.

HTH :)

As far as I am aware the sensors that fit into the gearbox are hall effect pickup in which case they need 3 connections, so if your sensor grounds through its casing then this is what you have got. It works by picking up on the gear inside the gearbox. However you can also buy the sensors where you strap magnets to the propshaft and use a sensor with that. However whichever way you do it they are quite expensive (when I was looking about £45). I have glued a couple of magnets to my propshaft and used a reed switch which works fine and cost about £1.50 in total. :D

mine are vdo if that makes any difference

Thanks for the info

I have already done exactly as you say based on Greengauges Web site.

It does not work. They don't give you a colour diagram for the hall sender.

They also only give you fitting instructions for the propshaft magnet type.

I thought I was doing the right thing by getting a proper gearbox unit.

I am doubting if it is a hall unit. Could it be a variable reluctance type?

I can't get them on the phone since today is a holiday.

It's strange cos using their colour system, then Green of the sender would = the supply & the signal wire from the sender which is Blue & Red would match the

other sender connection for the magnetic type Blue & Red on the speedo gauge.

It sound like a very reluctant type ;)

I don't know what else to suggest, other than obvious stuff - are you definately getting a 12 volt feed through? Test it with a light or multimeter - is the gearbox drive working? If there's only two wires, I don't think it matters which colour you use for each purpose - at least that's the impression I get from the instructions.

I have the Greengauges speed sensor with reed switch, which I bought because the speedo drive on my gearbox wasn't working. Obviously you've forked out for the hall effect sensor now, so it's best to persevere with that one, but if the worst came to worst, the magnetic sesnor is only £16 and is easy enough to set up - perhaps greengauges would do an exchange.

The only downside to using the magnetic sensor, is adjusting it to get a good signal - I had to lie under the car with the back axle up on stands, adjusting the sensor whilst my Dad was nice and safe in the drivers seat, spinning the back wheels up to 70mph :o (Mat - we need a smilie for having an accident in your pants)

Thanks for the replies.

I got an email from Greengauges this morning.

For anyone else considering using this type of speed sender the connections are:

Sender Green to Speedo Head Green

Sender Red & Blue to Speedo Head White & Black

Speedo head Red to ground 12v NEG, not to LIVE SUPPLY as per the instructions.

I fitted A Hall Effect sender and Greengauges speedo to my 2B, 4 weeks ago. I had to phone Greengauges several times regarding the wiring and the switch settings at the back of the gauge.

I had a number of issues.

1. Incorrect speedo reading

2. Speedo pointer jumping

I now have all the settings if you require them and can advise you on the wiring. It may be worth giving me a call on 07960 303345 if you get any further problems

Thanks very much for the reply.

Is the latest wiring info I posted above correct ?

Red of the Speedo to Neg?

Green of the Sender to switched Pos (Ign)?

Red/Blue of the Sender to White/Black of the Speedo?

For good reason I have no faith in the info (or lack of) that GG give me !

What binary number did your use for the calibration switch.

Did you use a multilier of 8 pulses x 1000 turns per mile ?

I'd really appreciate any other info your have.

What's a suitable time to call you ?

Regards

Colin
